Hello, I am Marcia Kay and my my cat is Bobbie. She is a 14 year old tortice shell calico. Recently at her annual exam the vet told me that her blood sugaar was 500 and she was probably diabetic. She was on a diet of dry Iams and temptations. I have changed her diet to low carb versions of Fancy Feast for three weeks now with success. I'm hoping that her dibetes can be controlled with diet. Is that wishful thinking?

Hi and welcome Marcia Kay and Bobbie. I don't think it's wishful thinking to hope for Bobbie to be able to be a diet controlled diabetic at all. Changing the diet is something most of us had to do, whether we used insulin or not.

Is Bobbie currently on any insulin now? Are you testing blood sugar at home to see how the blood sugar levels are affected by the diet change and/or insulin therapy?

Idjit is a diet controlled diabetic and we will always keep him on a low carb diet. I still test his blood sugar to be sure we are still in the optimal ranges and monitor his health.

If you are not home testing, this would be a good time to learn and have the tools at hand to monitor whether the BG is still high, and then learn what steps you can take to help Bobbie.

You can post in the Main Health forum with any questions or concerns. More members monitor that forum and will give you input.
