Hey I just wanted to say thanks to all the diligent advisers who are active on this board. The information, timely advice and moral support you provide here have made such a difference as I've figured out how to care for my "sugar cat". George is doing extremely well, and after only five days of insulin is markedly improved in energy, appetite and overall demeanor. He's gotten so used to the testing routine that now when he hears the little click of a fresh lancet going into the lancet device he comes running for a treat.
This morning my vet said she wanted to hire me to teach all her other diabetic owners how to test, track and get informed about diabetes. She was only half kidding!
It feels like we are on a good path at our house. Sending out a big thank-you to everyone here for the resources that helped make this happen!
 
What a gorgeous boy. I looked at his SS and he is looking good... Are you shooting once or twice a day? Your profile says twice but the PM dose column (immediate right of PMPS test number) is blank?

Also you might want to do a few spot checks at night. He could be dropping into green at night (many cats have lower numbers at night cos they don't eat as much then).

I saw you reduced the dose yesterday . Usually we only reduce by 1/4unit so I would be interested to see how it went and if he stayed in the blues..?

Thanks for checking us out. Yes, I am shooting twice a day and you're right - I forgot to fill in that PM units column, which was always the same as the AM column. I've updated, and added today's numbers as well. He stayed blue all day yesterday on 1u, but today since he was above 200 AMPS I gave him 1.5u but **really low**....hardly seeing the line. The change from 1.5 to 1 was what the vet told me to do based on his pre-shot number, but given that I've had such excellent advice here so far I think going forward I'll adhere to the .25 change instead.
At night he gets a can of fancy feast around 11pm and then I also leave him with a frozen chicken medallion (Instinct Raw) which he nibbles as it thaws. In the morning it's gone, and I feed him breakfast around 7am. Since his day numbers have been good and he isn't starving overnight, I haven't been waking up to do heroic midnight-measuring, probably making me a lazy mom!
 
Sounds good but its always best to hold a dose for a while to see how it settles in before changing it. The depot needs time to build up and there is frequently NDW (new dose wonkiness) so you might not see the impact of the change for a day or so.

Thanks! I read somewhere that us newbies were better off sticking with the general forum, as the tight-regulation forum was for experienced caregivers. I'll head on over there and hang around. I'm sure I'll learn a lot just by lurking.
 
That's not true... As soon as you are home testing, and have your spreadsheet (and preferably profile) set up.. And are feeding wet canned food, you are ready for tight regulation.

Come on over and join the party! There are other newbies on there.

I know that some people may feel new persons should stick to the general forum, but where's the logic in that? There is none. The best way for you to learn, if you are using Lantus, is to post on the Lantus forum. So what if you don't know much; where better to learn than from those who are posting in the Lantus forum.

General is just that: general. As in not specific.

Take a look around the Lantus forum, read the stickys at the top of the page, then jump on in.
Who cares how the first post looks.... make your subject: First post for my cat George
 
Nice low green yesterday. I am hoping you can get some night tests in...in case he is going even lower at night!

Otherwise, how are u getting on? Waiting for you on the lantus board..

I think the advice about posting first on the general forum is because there is usually plenty of help and support available there for people learning the basics - giving shots and hometesting.

For info on the insulin you are using it is well worth reading the information stickies about specific insulins in the relevant insulin support forum. For advice about insulin dosage it can be best to post on an insulin support forum if there is one for your insulin and if it is relatively active. For example: There are a lot of Lantus users here and that forum is pretty active. There aren't very many people using Caninsulin, so I'd suggest people using Caninsulin still use the general forum so as to attract more eyes to their questions. And there are very, very few people using the insulin that I use, Hypurin PZI (which behaves differently to other PZI's).

You can, of course, also post a question in more than one forum too. This is 'your' FDMB. Use it in whatever way brings the most benefit to you. :smile:
