Mama Update: Just Diagnosed and but still confused on dosing

Hello again! Mama is doing much better. However, she doesn't seem to need insulin every cycle. She is falling instead of rising. I lowered the dose to 1U, and that seems to be regulating it, but can you check her spreadsheet and advise on any changes I need to make. Should I have tried to give her .5U in the evenings? Even though her BG was kind of high tonight, it's my understanding that I should inject when her BG is falling. Was I correct in not administering tonight?

Hi Sarah
The numbers were really close together, both at AMPS and PMPS. BG meters are not quite that exact. In fact, they "can" be off by as much as +/-20%, and still get FDA approval.
Technically, the numbers you got on the 2 tests were virtually the same, so we wouldn't consider that "falling". If you saw a drop of maybe 25 or more, we'd classify that as falling.
So, you could have given a shot tonight. Wish I'd seen this earlier. A half-unit dose would have been okay to give.

It's okay though:-)

I like Carl's half unit. I would start giving the .5 units and see if you get a number 12 hours apart you are comfortable with. Comfortable with is the important part here. It is true the number is technically falling so if it makes you nervous, try to wait another 20 minutes without feeding and retest. Most likely you'd get a sudden rise and then you could shoot. Being 40 minutes late with PZI won't throw you off schedule that much.

Nerve wracking but a good problem to have. She is responding very well to the insulin. And even when you skip, she isn't sky high. If you'll take a test around 11.5 and post for input, we'll watch for you.

I didn't see your note about shooting .5, although that's what I've been trying towards. I realize now I could have done .5 on the evening of the 26th and maybe she'd be on a more regulated schedule. I was going to give her .5 tonight, but her bg was within a normal range and might go too low. Please see what she's been up to since 2/26. I'm wondering if she will regulate at .5 or perhaps the UTI she had just before her diagnosis was making her sugar abnormally high. She has always been overweight, though, and has exhibited the symptoms such as frequent urination and wobbly legs. Maybe going totally wet with the Fancy Feast is helping regulate naturally. Thoughts?

I had started taking your advice about testing twice before feeding, but yesterday I was down to one test strip and had to make a pharmacy run. I went ahead and fed because she was irate, lol.

She is looking good! We consider a cat to be in remission if the range from 40-120, without insulin, for 2 weeks, with the majority of the time in double digits. I'd keep a eye on her numbers, testing a couple times a day, feeding small meals. If she goes into the 170-200 range, you might shoot a tiny dose.

Yes, it certainly be a combination of getting rid of the infection and the diet change and some insulin. Whatever, it's great!
