Hi all,
I adopted a new cat last November. Gus is a beautiful ragdoll who is every bit a cuddly, love of a cat. I've recently noticed, though, that Gus takes much longer to pee than either of my female cats. The litter box is in my bathroom and he stopped in to pee as I was brushing my teeth tonight, so I timed him. (Nothing like someone watching you pee and counting to give you performance anxiety!) From entering the box to leaving it, Gus took almost exactly a minute to pee.
He was squatting the entire time, not making any sounds or signs of distress, and peed a pretty normal, cup-sized amount. But it took him basically a minute to do it. Both Dusty and Adele are much, much faster. I mean, if Dusty is peeing one of her lakes (ahh, the joy of an unregulated diabetic!), she's still only in there for maybe 30 seconds. My question for folks, I guess, is whether this is normal. Gus is the first male cat I've owned, so I have no idea whether maybe this is just what male cats do. Do your male cats take longer to pee than female cats? Is being in the litter box for a minute to pee (especially when peeing just a normal sized amount) cause for concern? Or since he isn't exhibiting other worrisome signs (sounds of distress, licking himself excessively, overly mad when I pet his lower abdomen) should I just take him to be a slow peer? Maybe put some Cat Fancy magazines next to the litter box so he can pass the time more comfortably or something...
Signed,
Ever-the-worrier, Michelle. ;-)
