Making raw diet question *no chicken*

hello all! Julius is still OTJ.... however my other kitty Cairo has allergies and we think it could be poultry... my question is who has made homemade food with beef/rabbit/??? I used Dr. Lisa's recipe (no egg because of the allergy) however I used chicken. What cut of beef/ other animal should I use? I want to make some this weekend to supplement what I am buying at the raw food pet store in my area.... any thoughts would be great! thank you!

For mine I buy them ground beef, here we have ground beef with different fat percentage in, as 5 %, 10 %, 15 %. I also buy them entrecotes, it has fat streams in between the meat. Other than that, my rule of thumb is that I never buy them parts I wouldn't eat myself.

Beef can be an allergen to some cats and it's not a meat a cat would normally eat in the wild. You can feed it, though. Rabbit, turkey, quail, other small game birds can be used.

also from Dr. lisa's site
Once we grind the whole meat during our cat food preparation, it goes directly into the freezer. Ground meat that you buy from the supermarket has had the surface bacteria ground into it. Once the meat is ground, the surface area increases, which makes a great breeding ground for bacteria. This meat then sits in the refrigerated section of the meat department. It is not immediately frozen which would halt any further bacterial growth.

Hello! thank you... however I can not do poultry ESPECIALLY turkey!! that was the first thing he had issues with last year! so.... NO birds! any other suggestions?? thanks!

Please note that the recipe on my site is a WITH BONES recipe.

I see so many people feeding very unbalanced diets with respect to calcium:phosphorus.

Hello! I ground chicken with bones and know that this is an important component of the diet. However due to allergies I can not do poultry. If I did rabbit how would I get the fat content up (Dr. Lisa diet) without chicken?

I know it is not the ideal.. but until I can get a grinder, I wonder if I could use the Primal Grind & just mix the supplements in.. they carry Turkey & Chicken flavors close to me.

I think it would be ok. The Primal Pet raw grinds are just meat and organs and bones.

I wish that I had more time to post here...but just don't have much free time anymore.

I have recently been using bacon fat to increase the fat content of my cats' diet and to add a bit of flavor. (I will add this to my website when I find the time.)

I slow-baked/broiled (can't remember which and I am a true idiot in the kitchen...I only use my oven to dry tennis shoes.) :-D 18 oz of the fattiest bacon I could find and ended up with 16 TBS of fat caught in the broiling pan. (The bacon was very dry and crispy at the end.)

I have not had time to run the composition percentage but have been adding in 3/4 - 1 tsp of fat per 100 grams (3.5 oz) of the 75% rabbit + 25% chicken/turkey meat/skin diet that I make up.

Since you won't be using any poultry, you can probably put in a bit more bacon fat. Start with only 1/4 tsp/100 grams of food to see if your cat likes it. Most cats love bacon!

Of course, shop for a product with NO nitrites/nitrates.

Butter is another option for an animal-based fat but I prefer bacon because it has a fat profile closer to chicken fat.

and then I can eat the bacon!!!

All vegetarians...close your ears....

I had not had any bacon in about 30+ years but I sure did pig out (no pun intended) on the bacon bits from my experiment! :-D

And my house...smelled really good!

But then....I got sad for the pig....

I am trying to be a vegetarian but I am failing miserably.
