? Major Problem with Alex

I need you help as I am not getting it from my vets. Alex has been pooing on the floor. I have 2 cats and 5 litter pans. I haven't changed litter in almost a year. Alex has been doing this a lot since he became diabetic in December 2017. I am almost to the point of putting him to sleep as I rent and the landlord isn't happy with this problem. Any advice? Please help me :(

What had the vet said about it? Is he peeing in the box normally? Does he ever poo in the box or always the floor? Does he go in random places or favorite spots? Had he had any problems with constipation?
 
I would agree with JanetNJ, constipation could be the problem and it affects many diabetic cats. A sprinkling of MiraLax in his food will help if that's the problem.
 
He always pees in the litter pan. He will poo in it every so often. He poo where ever he want to. I clean the pans 2 times a day and very close to giving up. I am at wits end with it. The poo is normal to start and then will be soft but he has done it with totally normal formed poo too. I am close to taking him to the vets and calling it quits. We had to switch is insulin last month because he wasn't responding to the ProZinc.
 
It could be he had a painful experience in the let box and now associates it with pain. Could be he decided he hates the litter (try switching to unscented in some boxes... Maybe the change will entice him). Will he go on a puppy training pad?

If you need a good oder cleaner try anti icky poo unscented... Or a new favorite Angry Orange concentrate. Both found on Amazon.

He could be telling you he doesn't feeling well. What are his numbers? Are you testing at home? Can you share your number log?

Is that him in your avatar? He is beautiful . Love his face.
If you look at my signature and click on my old Tyler's spreadsheet you will see my life is his poo. :p

What are you using to clean the areas where he poops? Is he doing this all over your rental or has he particular spots. Like in a corner or on a mat . That type of thing.

This can be a form of him talking to you to say he is feeling under the weather or it may be a sensorial thing where he simply feels better with a different type of surface under his rear. He may no longer wish to share trays or to poop where wee has been despite the tray being clean.

Is he an indoor only cat?
 
He is an indoor only cat. He has had this problem off and on since like I said December. I had him at the vets for it and they ran blood test and found out he was diabetic. He has had tummy problems on and off. He was a bottle baby and the doctor that raised him just talked to me. She thinks he is having a bout of his tummy problem and because of the bouts of diarrhea in the pans he remembers it and won't use a pan. She is a total cat person and has had pan issues of her own. She said changing pans is an option but doesn't think it will work with this problem. She does want me to add 1 more pan in his common accident area. I will have to add about 8 of them. She said if I can add 1 to my bedroom. The problem is the other cat. Alex is litter fussy too. So changing litters won't work. I have potty pads in a couple of areas and they make good beds. The doctor that bottle feed him is having me start him on Flagyl again to see if that makes a difference. His normal vet is on vacation. So we will see what happens. Thank you for the advice. And yes the picture is Alex with a kicker from Tiny Kittens fundraisers. It is handmade by one of the members of the facebook group.
 
Couldn't hurt to try adding some feliway diffusers in case the problem is caused by anxiety. Sometimes temporarily keeping them confined to a small space can help too.

My cat Julie had been peeing in my son's room and a spot in the kitchen. Last weekend I spayed a product called angry orange in those places and, knock on wood, she hasnt peed in those places since then.
 
Hate to tell you I have used the diffusers and the feliway spray since December and they haven't helped. Plus you can't put them were your litter pans are and that means only 1 room in my place. I put a diffuser in and still poo on the rug. So tried the spray. Poo on the rug. I haven't heard of the spray you talked about. Where did you get it?
 
How regulated is he? Can you share his numbers? If you aren’t home testing but would like to we can help you with that. Getting him in better numbers could make a big difference.
 
Have you tried Cat Attract litter or the Cat Attract litter additive? The litter works for me if someone decides to pee outside the box.

Don't do that. :eek: Sets a bad example to the pusscat :p

Diffusers and felaway never worked for my old Tyler under any circumstances. He's not interested in catnip either.

Adding Slippery Elm Bark to food can help soothe a cat's tum.

If this started right about the time you started to give insulin twice daily , it may simply be an anxiety thing. Especially with another cat in the house.

I shall go away this evening and have a bit of a think.
