Hi everyone! I’m on the CKD forum but this is my first time posting here.

My 12-year old boy, Charlie, was recently diagnosed with kidney disease (stage 2) and diabetes (still figuring out insulin dosage, just upped to 2 units 2X daily of Lantus glargine). I’ve been giving him kidney food and trying to get his blood sugar under control with insulin. Of course, the fancy bugger wayyyy prefers the most expensive food (Hills K/D early consult wet food), and I’ve been exclusively feeding wet, and I desperately need to cut down on the cost as it’s almost $400/month on food alone vs. $250 for the less expensive (purina/RC). His appetite is pretty good, he’s just a jerk.

My question is; is there any kind of topper/yummy enticing additive that I can mix into the cheaper food that are safe for both kidney disease and diabetes? He will eat the food eventually when he gets hungry enough but I don’t want to leave wet food sitting out so long (feeding 4X daily to help with this). He likes Hydracare, but it’s also expensive and I can’t find any info online if it’s safe for both conditions. He also likes the Purina fortiflora, but from what I could find online it looks like it’s fine for kidneys but not ideal for diabetes. I was thinking maybe fish oil, as he has dandruff anyway, but info is pretty limited online for that; does it even taste good to them? If so, what kind is recommended? Also, do the different brands of food really differ much in nutrition/extending his life? Any advice very much appreciated!

Thanks,

Macey & Charlie

Hi Macey and Charlie
Have you tried any of the Weruva wet foods
They are low carb and low phosphorus
Tap in this link and look at post #32 Post numbers are to the right of each post
There is a list of wet pate foods that I gave to another member

Many members sprinkle Fortiflora on their kitties food that are diabetic.
You can also try Bonita flakes or a little Parmesan cheese

Hi Diane,

Thanks for your response. I have seen those and considered them;I’ve been doing some research tonight actually. I’ve read that they are higher in protein than the more popular veterinary diets, but I’ve also heard that there’s maybe new info lately that a bit higher protein isn’t a bad thing as long as the phosphorus is minimized. He has had some muscle wasting so I’m curious if maybe it would be a good option… Plus it would be a bonus for the diabetes.

I’ll give it some more thought.

Thanks again!

Macey

If you would like to set up what we call our signature and our spreadsheet in case you want help with dosing here is the link . There are a lot of experienced members here. If it wasn't for me taking there advice I know Tyler wouldn't be in remission since 1-24-21
I'm glad Charlie is on Lantus. So was Tyler
We adjust the doses by 0.25 units at a time and use the U-100 syringes with half unit markings
Here is the link
Here is a link helping us to help you link. If you noticed, our members have some basic information about their cat's in their signature. This helps us to not pester you by asking the same questions (your cat's name, insulin type, date of diagnosis, etc.) repeatedly. We also have a link to our spreadsheet in our signature. We are very numbers driven. The spreadsheet is a record of your cat's progress. By linking it in your signature, we can follow along and provide feedback should you need the help
If you need help setting up our spreadsheet just ask , we have a member who will be happy to do it for you
