Hi everyone! I’m on the CKD forum but this is my first time posting here.
My 12-year old boy, Charlie, was recently diagnosed with kidney disease (stage 2) and diabetes (still figuring out insulin dosage, just upped to 2 units 2X daily of Lantus glargine). I’ve been giving him kidney food and trying to get his blood sugar under control with insulin. Of course, the fancy bugger wayyyy prefers the most expensive food (Hills K/D early consult wet food), and I’ve been exclusively feeding wet, and I desperately need to cut down on the cost as it’s almost $400/month on food alone vs. $250 for the less expensive (purina/RC). His appetite is pretty good, he’s just a jerk.
My question is; is there any kind of topper/yummy enticing additive that I can mix into the cheaper food that are safe for both kidney disease and diabetes? He will eat the food eventually when he gets hungry enough but I don’t want to leave wet food sitting out so long (feeding 4X daily to help with this). He likes Hydracare, but it’s also expensive and I can’t find any info online if it’s safe for both conditions. He also likes the Purina fortiflora, but from what I could find online it looks like it’s fine for kidneys but not ideal for diabetes. I was thinking maybe fish oil, as he has dandruff anyway, but info is pretty limited online for that; does it even taste good to them? If so, what kind is recommended? Also, do the different brands of food really differ much in nutrition/extending his life? Any advice very much appreciated!
Thanks,
Macey & Charlie
