So, I'm waiting for pet insurance girl.

Got Maahes into the vet today. He's definitely diabetic, but NO KETONES! The vet recommended that I start him on Prozinc .5 unit 1x daily, then increase to .5 units 2x daily, and so on and so forth until he's stabilized. The bad thing is that the office did not have any on hand, so he is going to call around to different pharmacies today to find someone who has it. Maahes also has a double ear infection, so he'll be pleased to start his antibiotics tonight.

The good news is that his blood work came back alright. No indications of any renal failure. the vet said that I'm lucky and that he's lucky, that it was caught early enough. The Vet stated that Maahes has a great chance at remission.

I wanted to thank all of you for your support and advice.

Good to finally have that confirmation on your Maahes being diabetic. Now you can start to treat it better.

Prozinc is a good insulin, but it does not last for 24 hours in cats. Most cats get somewhere around 10 hours duration on that insulin.

Did your vet give a reason for only starting with one a day dosing (SID) instead of twice a day dosing (BID)?

Antibiotics are notorious for causing GI upset.

It may help to replenish the good bacteria that get killed off by using a probiotic. Some examples are Forti Flora, Intelliflora, or 1-2 teaspoons of plain yogurt with active cultures if the cat is not sensitive to dairy products.

So glad he doesn't have ketones! You really dodged a bullet there!

If you wind up giving low doses, ProZinc can be dosed using a U-100 syringe by using a conversion chart. Basically each half unit mark on a U-100 syringe equals 0.2 units of insulin. That makes it really handy for fine dose adjustments. I've got Gracie on 1.2 units and she does very well on that.

I'll definitely pick up some plain yogurt, but I don't think there will be much tummy upset. The antibiotics aren't pills; they are ear drops. Maahes *hates* when I put stuff in his ears. I already have battle wounds.

My vet wants to start with 1x daily dosing to ensure that there are no ill effects as Maahes has a history of allergies. He said that we will definitely get to 2x daily dosing. The vet did state that he prefers to use ProZinc rather than Lantus. ProZinc will also be much *much* cheaper for me. Looking at the research, there isn't too much difference. If Maahes doesn't respond well to ProZinc, we will go to Lantus.

As for the spreadsheet...I've got an app for that! *cough cough*.
