Hello-

I have a healthy FIV+ boy (probably middle aged). Do you think I should give him Lysine supplements daily to boost his immunity even though he is healthy?

Thank you.

If he isn't having problems, I believe I've heard that continuous use may make it unhelpful if a herpes flare ocurrs. Perhaps you might ask your vet.

I had an FIV+ cat (passed away from an unrelated issue) and I gave him Lysine daily, he had a herpes flare up once in awhile and my vet told me to double the amount of Lysine. It always worked fine. I can't remember the maintenance dose, if it was 250mg or 500mg. Also, he had less frequent flare-ups after I started giving him daily Lysine.

I do not believe Lysine causes herpes flares. It is used to treat herpes.

I give this to my foster on a daily basis. Im not refuting what you are saying, but I am wondering if you have any sources. Since the lysine barely does anything for her anyway, I hate to make it worse by using it.

Thanks!

Are you giving the Lysine; a human supplement to the cat?

Not sure the question was directed toward me. I give the 'veterinary' formula, which is the same as for people...just packaged for cats.
