Hi all. My cat has bad asthma and is on Atopica/ cyclosprine which is an immune suppressant. It is supposed to be safer alternative than Prednisolone. My cat did very well with her asthma symptoms when she was taking the Atopica but also a small dose of liquid Prednislone every day to every other day to wean her off the Prednisone. Soon after the Prenislone was stopped, her coughing returned. The IM at the hospital said that Prednislone would make the diabetes hard to manage. I have an appt coming up with her, and I want her to consider putting her back on the Prednislone. Why should my cat suffer when she is only giving a brief time to live?? My question is..how much will the Pred affext her BG? Any input from beans with sugarcats on Pred would be much appreciated!

Each cat can react differently to pred. My Bailey was on pred at the end and it raised the BG but I could counteract with an increase in insulin dose. I would use the pred.

I agree, if he needs Prednislone then give it.. and adjust the insulin to match. What makes you think he has a short time to live? Cats can live to 20 or older...

Brie has been on prednisolone since November. His sugars have been harder to manage but we just adjust his insulin dose. I test him once a day usually pre pm meal/shot. Luckily he eats the same amount every day and has no problems with nausea or vomiting for right now. I vote for the pred. When Brie was first diagnosed with cancer my regular vet did not want to put him on pred. We did another US 4 weeks later and the cancer had progressed more. That was when my vet started him on pred. I did have a kitty with asthma that was on inhaled steroids. His asthma wasn't that bad though. Boo couldn't take steroids because he almost went into liver failure from steroids.

My Payne who is 6 takes Prednislone for ketones .... she has had DKA 4x and ketones come on her quickly, and for some reason the pred. helps keep them away. It does mess with her BGs and we adjust frequently but she is healthy and spunky! I have tried stopping but she always comes back to the same place ... ketones. I would do what I needed to do, quality of life is important.

Thanks for the replies. She is dx with possible lung cancer. I also do not do the home testing because of her being sick with asthma and her disposition is not good when being touched. For some reason, she has not coughed in about 6 days.. Some discomfort with the lung inflammation. She gets very agitated and slams her tail when she has chest tightness or trouble breathing. I can usually help her with the Albuterol inhaler. I would love that Prednislone back but I do not think the doctor would give it to me unless I really pushed. She would make me do at home testing and Kitten is not wanting anypart of it. Her ear does not bleed well, ofcourse. She is back to growling at the insulin shots and she jumped and I did half a fur shot this morning. Back to two person shots now. Oh, my family cat lived until 20.

Hi. You only tested once a day and u kept him safe being on the Pred? Interesting. I might be able to do that with Kitten. I increased her Flovent inhaler and her rescue puffs and she is doing better, but that never helped before. Very puzzling. The doctor wants me to add an oral bronchodilator that will revv her up to manic proportions plus they prescribed a very sedating cough syrup. I havnt given them to her yet. Only if I really need too. These vets are crazy. She told me to increaae the rescue inhaler to ten breaths, I always to 6 max, and Kitten was doing backflips. It was awful. I knew better. Why do I keep listening to these boneheads.

Before pred Brie's sugars were very well managed. I would test him once every five days. The preshot before pred his sugars would be 100 to 140. I started the pred and his sugar went up to 300 after 2 days. He used to get 1 unit twice a day. Now he gets 3 units twice a day most days. Going up to 3 units made me really nervous. His preshot sugar recently has been running 200 to 250. I did a mid cycle last week and he was 95. He eats the same amount of food twice a day. Aside from knowing he has cancer he appears healthy. If he would start eating less or start vomiting I would have to test more often. Recently he had a few bouts of constipation and received enemas. Luckily I do check his sugars because they were running low after the enemas and I had to adjust his insulin. I just have to be vigilant to any change. The other week I was working 3 to 11 for three nights and had my husband give him 2.5 units twice a day. My husband can't check his sugar he just doesn't have the patience. At times Brie doesn't bleed well either. I always worry about hypos so I was nervous not being home so I erred on the side of caution. When I use to give Boo flovent I would give him 2 puffs and try to hold the mask over his face for about 20 seconds or as long as he let me. How many puffs of the albuteral are you doing at a time? Luckily I only had to use the albuteral a few times. Do you by any chance belong to the yahoo group feline asthma inhaled meds? Maybe you could post a question about adding an oral bronchodialator . I would worry too. I wouldn't want my kitty to be doing backflips either. I don't know much about glucose test strips for urine but I wonder I you could dip stick her urine a few times a day if doing an ear prick isn't an option. I know the anxiety involved in caring for a sick kitty all to well.
