Luna dental

I'm very worried. She has slightly elevated liver #'s and history of ketones though they're basically gone now. Her BG's are so high and refusing to go low so I'm really hoping dental helps. Her teeth are nasty (got her from shelter like that). Tell me it'll be OK :(.

update:
I rescheduled her for the 19th. We're gonna be gone a few days next week and I don't want anything to happen while we're gone if the dental does lower her level's - so I'm gonna wait until I get back to do it!

Hang in there. Many cats here have dentals done and are good to go after. It's a scary thing anytime a cat has to have anesthesia, but the risks of not doing it aren't great either. I'm sure you will be on edge all day until she's back home.
 
Also, did they give you instructions for insulin on the morning of the procedure. The instructions from my vet were to give half the dose in the am. Max's sugars improved -the very next day- after the dental, so keep a close eye on the sugars in the days following.

They said do not give any insulin or food in the AM and continue insulin in PM. I started 6.0 units today so I'll definitely watch her at night. What kind of sugar changes did you see in Max? Huge spike or little? Just curious.
 
He was in the 300-500 at all times prior to the dental. The day after, he had numbers in the blues, and greens in the days following. At this point, we were not on the message board here yet, so the dosing was from the vet and a little wonky. His numbers bounced around a little bit for about 10 days following the dental, then settled with all numbers being in blues and greens. We've been reducing the dose ever since, and now max is off insulin. At the time of the dental we were up to 6 units with no response as well.

That's great to hear. I've found the vets have a hard time changing insulin doses, and most I've been to seem to think a certain dose will last forever and be fine. Assuming she does drop will I be lowering by a lot or a bit (dose wise)? I haven't reduced a dose yet lol. Not sure how it works. Luna really seems to be a carbon copy of Max's #'s so far, hopefully she follows suit with the good response to dental.
 
Yeah, I reduced by 0.5U when we were going down, because of the high dose. As you get closer to maybe 3U then you can start reducing by 0.25U. These were hard for me to do because my eyesight so we stuck with the 0.5U. The high flat numbers sure do look the same as Max, and are actually easier to deal with than numbers that are all over the place. Best wishes for tomorrow.

I kind of prefer .5 just because .25 seems impossible to consistently measure, I'll do it if I have to I guess but .5 seems more realistic. Luna went OTJ twice in the last two years I believe, and thanks!
 
Good luck. The dental work should help Luna. BTW, every time I look at Luna's profile, I see a new photo of her!

Our sitter (my mom) is just gonna come over and give her insulin, she's not comfortable testing blood.

She's practicing for the dentist in this picture. I think this photo captures her best :joyful: (for now).
