Lucky's BG readings

I am testing her 3 times per day she gets her Lantus @ 7:30am and 730pm. I just switched her this past week to low carb foods like solid gold / perfect bistro / wilderness from the Fancy Feast gravy foods. She has always been a picky eater. She gets food in the morning and evening. I think that I'm going to start testing her prior to feeding (in the evening she gets her food about 5 and I test just prior to her shot time. I also test her mid day.

Hi there ... & welcome to FDMB, the "club" that nobody every really wanted to join!:)

It would really be helpful if you could plug Lucky's #s into the spreadsheet we use her at FDMB! You can change the BG reference range numbers (for human meters) shown on the colored tabs at the top to the reference range that's correct for an AlphaTrak2 meter (see the link to my SS in my signature, below for an example). Here's a link to the instructions for setting up a SS:
Suggestions, Tech Support & Testing Area

Would also be great if you could put Lucky's basic information in your signature link, too. In this way, people here who respond to your questions/concerns can see at-a-glance what insulin you're using, what you're feeding, etc. As most here use human glucose meters, please make sure you list "AlphaTrak2 meter" - preferably in CAPS - in your signature, too; helps alert others to the difference in glucose reference ranges.

I'm not familiar with solid gold/ perfect bistro/ wilderness in terms of their carbohydrate levels. Can you tell me what the carb levels are in these foods?

Here's a great food chart from veterinarian Dr. Lisa Pierson: food chart
We recommend keeping kitties below 8 to 10% carbs or lower. (Also, please note that the Fancy Feast Classics pates, as well as many other brands, are available at/below the recommended carb levels.)

As for testing, it is important to test Lucky's BG level- before feeding anything & administering the insulin. In this way, you'll make certain your cat's always at a safe-to-shoot BG level. (The sequence: Test/ feed/ shoot.)

If you hop over to the Lantus/Levemir forum, you'll find yellow "stickies" at the top of the page that show you two protocols for dosing with Lantus: The "Start Low, Go Slow" approach and "Tight Regulation."

Ok so in the morning I'm ok because I test / feed as a treat then give her her shot. I need to not feed her then in the evening until it's time to test her. Hard because when I am working from home she asks for food about 5. I will pop over and check out the protocols. Thanks!!

Yes, and it's also very important that you don't feed anything in the two-hour window before your kitty's shot time. (The only exception being if you needed to steer Lucky out of a hypoglycemic event.)
