Today Lucky through up. It was mostly liquid but it had a reddish tinge from blood. I looked in her room and she would not eat the Fancy Feast Chopped grill that I had in there. She barely touched it. I noticed that the last two days she's not finishing all her food like she used to. I gave her some petroleum jelly as now we are in shedding season. Not sure if her stomach could be irritated from the hair or if it's the food? Smokey my HT cat used to throw up reddish tinged liquid too before being diagnosed. Once diagnosed and the vomiting stopped that cleared up. His stomach irritation was from vomiting so much before being stabilized. She does occasionally throw up, but usually hair balls. I did try giving her Turkey and Giblets Fancy Feast flavor. She did eat some of that, so I'm keeping an eye on her. So not sure if there is something in the chopped grill irritating her stomach or if it's the fancy feast in general that's causing stomach issues. My vet isn't open until Tuesday. And I know that they don't have any openings this week when I get off of work. So I may have to wait until next Saturday when Smokie goes in. Is there any thing OTC that I can give her to help settle her stomach?? Should I try switching to a better food?

Thanks!
Mel

I know that sometimes vets prescribe generic pepsid to help settle a stomach in cats. I do have some generic pepsid in the house I could give to her. But not sure she can have the pill pockets that I would have to put it in. I'd be afraid that it would spike her blood sugar.

You can give 1/4 a 10 mg tablet of Pepcid. You can dissolve it in some water in an oral syringe and shoot it in your kitty's mouth...like in the back so it doesn't get spit out. I did that with Gypsy when she wouldn't eat.

I wish I had some insight for you! Keep us posted. Sending healing vines!

I will try giving her some pepsid. She has been into her room to eat again. Not a whole lot but she doesn't eat it all in one sitting either. So it may take her the rest of the night to finish it. I will call the vet Tuesday. I probably won't be able to get her in until Saturday when Smokie goes in for bloodwork. Hoping it's just stomach irritation from hair and not the food or something worse!

If the vomiting increases, becomes more violent, contains more blood, or contains what looks like coffee grounds (digested blood), go to an emergency vet. GI bleeding can indicate a potentially fatal problem.

Also, if Lucky becomes lethargic, almost comatose, go to an emergency vet.

Just wanted to update everyone on how Lucky is doing. I gave her some Friskies and that was 1/2 a can. She ate it all last night. So this morning I went out at 6:30 am and went to get some more Friskies. Gave her a whole can, and when I came home she had eaten like 97% of what was on the plate and she's still continuing to finish what's there. :RAHCAT

I called the back up vet at like 5:30 am and talked to him. He said if she had not eaten by tonight to bring her in tomorrow. When I came home and saw she'd eaten I went to the litter box to see what she had done. She did pee more and poop. Checked her poop and broke it in half it was all hair inside! He thinks that was the problem. He said if she throws up again, to bring her in. As long as she seems to be eating and doing fine, I'll take her in when I take Smokie in and have her checked out then. My regular vet is always fine with tag alongs :)

So for now she is eating Friskies the Special Diet. I noticed when I was at the store that the Friskies Special Diet has a new flavor. It's Chucked Chicken in Gravy? I didn't get it because I saw gravy and though it would be more in carbs. I stuck to the pate flavors. Just wondering if anyone else has given the Special Diet Friskies Chuncked Chicken in Gravy?

I've been giving my civie Dancer some egg yolk lecithin sprinkled on her food to help her pass the hair balls more easily. She's quite the fastidious groomer, and washes not only herself, but her civie buddy Monet too. Someone else here recommended it, so I thought I'd give it a try. It's supposed to break apart the hair clumps, or stop them from forming into clumps in the first place. Lecithin has lubricant properties so apparently this practice acts as a 'hair rinse' to prevent swallowed hairs from tangling into a ball in the stomach. Instead the hairs move out with the chyme and eventually land in the litter box in the stool.

She's been on the Egg Yolk Lecithin for a bit more than a month now, and it does seem to be helping. She's only hacked up one hair ball in that time and seems to be pooping out more of the hair in her feces. Sometimes, the poops seem to be half hair or more!

I use the Nature's Plus 600 mg capsules, open and sprinkle on her food.

Will look into that. A friend also mentioned Slippery Elm Bark. Because it's supposed to disolve the hair? Have not tried that yet. But will look into those!

Another update, she's decided to eat the Fancy Feast again! Gave her the 1/2 of can that was already opened. I figured it's worth a try, or I'd give it to the other cats to finish. But she ate it! That girl loves to keep me on my toes I tell ya! :dizcat
