Lowering the BG numbers

Ok so i know about dealing with hypos but what do sea ll do when our babies are in the hyper stage, My Tilly has been in the vet for 3 days as she went quite low down to 50 and she was so out of it not completely in a coma but not very responsive she had an infection (common i know) and i brought her back today as she had normalised.

She was fine and for the last hour she was extremely cranky attacking my other cats and constantly asking for food, i just took a reading and she is now 480.6.

Does anyone have any fps on lowering the BG?

Which insulin.
What were you shooting when she hypo'd
Do you have any collection of test numbers at all?
What is she eating?

Well unfortunately at the moment she is on Caninsulin at 2 units twice a day she was on 4 units of insulin when she hypo'd she is also eating Purina diabetic food (pate)
Her numbers bounce all over the place, normally from 310 to levels at 90, but occasionally she will drop lower even when there is no change in her diet or insulin
 
Is there anyway you can get a spread sheet up?
Can I get someone to help you?
 
that wouldn't be much use today cause she has only just come home tonight so i don't have all her readings but it literally is low in the morning middle range then it rises at night i don't know if that is just cause she isn't regulated yet or whether she has had too much food
 
Caninsulin is not the best of insulins, and does not last the full 12hrs, so you are going to see alot of ups and downs.
I know it's not easy in UK, but if at all possible, you will find much better results will be had if you are using Lantus.
I know there are a few others in UK that have had a bit of a battle to get it, but they have been able to get Lantus from their vets.

Once you do have your spreadsheet set up and you populate it with your test results, you will be able to see how well or poorly the caninsulin is working.
 
Thanks for your reply, i know caninsulin isn't working properly i have told the vet i want off it because she was in with the infection they are demanding i give it another week on this insulin and if she is still up and down they will change it, but he has stated that i can't have Lantus, he said that there have been quite a few insulins taken away from them. He did say there were others so hopefully one of those will work. Its annoying cause she is so irritable especially when she is on a hyper and starving but concerned food may raise it higher?!

i know from the readings she has had before its not working cause its constantly up and down all day, she only got low readings when she had the infection before that and now she is pretty much always high above 400, luckily she has no ketones which i was surprised at

What do i need to put in the Spreadsheet
the units of insulin at what times
her readings every two hours is that right?

Thank you so much for your help as I've done the readings but for every cat it seems to be different

Most people just get the bg log template up and running on Google Docs and then just fill in the boxes daily :smile: The instructions are here: http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=50130

The date column is self explanatory.

PS is the pre-insulin shot blood glucose number.

U is the amount of insulin given.

The + numbers are the hours after the insulin shot. If you test your cat 3 hours after the insulin shot and get a 250, then you would enter 250 in the +3 column for that date.

Most people here have their spreadsheet linked in their signature. Take a look at a few to see how most people generally have their spreadsheet set up.

You don't need to fill out every single box for any given day. At the very least, you need to be testing before giving each insulin shot. So twice a day at the minimum. Random in-between shot times testing is helpful to see how the insulin is working for your cat. One or two random tests is fine and doesn't necessarily need to be done every day. Testing every 2 hours from the morning insulin shot to the evening insulin shot is what we call a curve. Curves are really helpful to see how the insulin works for your cat over a 12 hour period. Based on the curve you can determine what the nadir is (lowest bg level of the day) and if the insluin dose needs to be adjusted.
