My cat has just tested 6.9 (Australian).at +6. This is the lowest she has ever been. Shes normally 11-13. But it is night time. I tested coz she was screaming for food. I have replaced one kibble meal with Fancy Feast for 2 weeks as the vet said she should go up to 4U so I opted to change her diet instead. So is this an OK number?

Hi Deborah,

The number's safe (and nice!). Can you let us know:

* Which insulin your cat is getting.

* What is her current dose?

* Which type of meter: human or pet?

It would be great if you could set up a spreadsheet for your kitty and also add some info to your forum signature so we don't keep asking you all this stuff. The info you need to get started is covered in this post:

How to help us to help you better

With the insulin dosing and BG results in a spreadsheet for your kitty we'll be able to give you better feedback. :)

She is currently on lantus 3U
3 weeks ago her curve indicated she needed to go up to 4U (we ran it twice a week after to be sure) Another group told me not to up the dose but to change her to Fancy Feast OR reset her to 1U. I changed dinner to Fancy Feast and kept the lantus at 3U. Its 2 weeks since the change so had to see what was happening. Other group has unjoined me for reasons over testing (I think) so im left in a mess. I have tried loading the spreadsheet on my phone tabket and laptop but it won't load and I don't know why. Because of my eyesight it needs to be on my laptop.
I use an AlphaTrak pet meter and have no problems getting blood and testing. Any ideas on the spreadsheet ?

I'm going to tag @Bandit's Mom to help you get the spreadsheet going. Hopefully she can help!

3U is a pretty big dose of Lantus and changing 1U at a time can cause you to skip over the 'perfect' dose, so I'm glad you decided to be cautious.

6.9 is a great number on an AlphaTrak, but now that you're starting to see numbers like that with the food change, it's even more important to test to keep her safe. I'm glad you're doing well with that :). Once you have the spreadsheet working and can load some of your numbers in, we may have some more specific thoughts about where to go from here.

I'm tagging Bhooma (@Bandit's Mom) to ask her if she can help you with the spreadsheet problem. She's in India so it may be a little while before she replies to this thread.

In the meantime, please can you have a look at the following sticky info post:

Dosing Methods for Lantus

Till we know where your kitty is at BG-wise, I'd suggest you stick with the 'Start Low, Go Slow' guidelines. In particular, until we've all got a better picture of your kitty's status, I'd recommend you hang fire on any dose increases for the time being and also follow the guideline to reduce the dose immediately by 0.25 units if ever you get a reading below 5.0mmol/L.

Typical time for nadir on Lantus is between +4 and +6 hours after dose administration but it may occur earlier or later, and it can move around. If you start getting numbers as low as today's earlier in the cycle, start feeding small snacks to hopefully slow the drop, monitor BG more closely, and post for help and advice.
