This is crazy!!! the numbers LANTUS

Hello all My name is Gary and My cat is Imo. He is newly diagnosed with diabetes. His numbers have not been good. I did my first curve with numbers 436 pre shot then every two hours 250 144 87 261 433 531 then the next day his numbers the same till last night. His number was HI which is over 600 great another fir shot. He has been not gaining any weight and seemed miserable and I thought he is going to die soon. So last night I finally decided no more DRY CAT FOOD. If he is hungry he will eat. SO last night gave him his wet food and he ate some. I got up early and gave him more wet food. I checked Imo's glucose number preshot today. His NUMBER was 87. 87 wow did the taking the dry food away make that huge of a number??????? This is crazy. I know that the insulin builds up in their system and I will watch this closely but, I am happy that his number is so good. I DID NOT GIVE IMO HIS SHOT TODAY since the number was under 100. The only concern now is if his numbers do rise slightly HOW DO I KNOW HOW MUCH LANTUS to give???? We are still very new to this and I do not want to give Imo to much.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome Gary & Imo...

And yep just getting rid of the dry food can do exactly that!! :-D In fact my big guy Maxwell had exactly 2 yes 2 doses of insulin after I got him before he was as we call it here OTJ (Off the Juice or in remission) and this coming November 1st he will celebrate his 2 year anniversary of being in remission and off insulin. All it took for him was getting the dry food out of his system and he hasn't looked back since.

As far as if Imo's numbers rise again how much insulin...well that would depend on where he was started. But since you have recently changed his diet unless he is over 120 I wouldn't give him any insulin at all since on a human meter normal for a cat is between 40-120 (pet only meter normal is between 70-150). Most of us use human meters so I tend to give advice based on a human meter. However, if he should get above 120 I would start him back on insulin at no higher than .5u twice a day and test him at least on his preshots as well as trying to get in a +6 test which should be right around his nadir or lowest point.

And when in doubt post here and someone will help out. :-D Now the relaxed lantus board isn't always that busy but if you aren't getting a fast enough response you can always post over on Health and someone will be sure to jump in.
