What kind of treats does everyone here feed their cats that are low carb?
Are they available at regular stores such as petsmart and petco?

My cats looovve the freeze dried chicken, or as we affectionately call it, "kitty crack." I buy it from Petco. In fact, I get the larger bag in the dog section b/c we go through it so fast.

Agree with Eva. Halo freeze dried treats are good, but I've started buying a bag of the dried chicken at Petsmart - it's with the dog treats. The small chunks break into flakes easily. Everyone gets some when I have it out, even the dog.

Wellness makes some jerky treats, our Petsmart isn't carrying them yet but some of the mom/pop shops do I think.

A friend recently suggested dried Salmon cat treats you can get at Petsmart (Beefeaters, I think) - I just bought a container and it was a big hit, too.

I boil chicken breasts, cut into small pieces and freeze in small packets. I always have a container in the fridge, I use them for testing treats. You can also add pieces to food to improve diet.

I keep the freeze dried chicken (dog food aisle) from Petsmart in the house, but I don't use it too often because it's like kitty crack....they LOVE it. I keep it as a back up, and for emergency inappetance...it is really good to sprinkle on food to encourage eating....HOWEVER be careful or you will be in Pat's shoes, sprinkling it on their food every day!

Hi Lori - all the animals, yapper included love Pure Bites dried chicken breast from Petco. I have fed them Wellness Pure Delights chicken and lamb jerky, kitties not so crazy, yapper loves; and when I ordered the automat off the internet, it came with a package of dried salmon bits, just called "Salmon Snacks", no idea how to get more of it but I have never tried because once they had the freeze dried chicken, they weren't interested in anything else, so the yapper will end up with all of the others.

There are lots of low carb treats out there, Lori. Dyana brought us some of these oh so yummy (to the kitties) freeze dried salmon, Wildside http://cgi.ebay.com/100-PURE-Alaskan-Wi ... 255630b086 (not sure where Dyana gets hers at, but this is what they are). I also buy freeze dried chicken livers on line from The Pet Guys http://www.petguys.com/-073101017140.html, runs about $24 a tub, including shipping. I also get the Freeze Dried Chicken from Petsmart in the dog section. And I will echo what everyone else sez about them...it's like kitty crack. All the kittys gather round at testing time so that they can get some...and they are like vacuums...hoovering the stuff up like crazy.
Oh, I also get the fishy flakes (bonito) from one of the local Asian food markets. Much cheaper to get them there then on line, so if you have one of them around you, that would be the best place to purchase.
Happy low carb shopping!!!

Thanks everyone.

Ginger would never eat any treats, so I was not concerned before about getting her any, but I would like to buy my
2 non-diabetic cats some healthy treats from now on. They always have loved treats.

Hopefully........ they are both non-diabetic anyway.
Lucky I have checked and he is fine, but Babibear went spastic when I tried to test him.
Both hubby and I (together) tried to control him so we could test him and we could not hold him down.
He is 18 lbs of muscle. lol

When we pet him, we are touching his ears more to get him use to ear touching.

Lori, my Ali was strictly a temptations type of gal and would NEVER touch any other treat, no matter what. I offered them to her, but she would just sniff then stick her nose up in the air. I have been giving the fishy flakes to Spot and Ralph for about a year now and I've offered them to her throughout that time, but again, nose up in the air. Now, all of a sudden, when she knows the other two are getting fishy flakes, she's right there along side them, waiting for her little morsel. She also wouldn't touch the FD livers, but now she demands them to be sprinkled on top of her food at meal time. Sometimes that's the only way I can get her to eat. She also enjoyed the Salmon. And the FD Chicken....well, let me tell you......she's just as much of a hoover as her bigger brothers. So, Ginger may very well become a treataholic if you purchase any of those!

Those of you who are feeding Pure Bites freezedried chicken- King Wholesale has a really good price if you don't mind buying in bulk. $21.49 per 11.6 oz bag (these are BIG bags!); minimum order is $25 so you'd have to buy two bags. Free shipping. We get six bags at a time @ $19.99 per bag.

Even at $21.49 per bag, it works out to $1.85 per oz. That's less than (edited b/c i can't count!) a little over half the price of Halo's freeze-dried chicken, which at $6.95 per 2.2 oz, is $3.16 per oz!

If you're not sure if your pets would like it, pick up a small bag from Petco for a taste test first before buying in bulk.

Nina, glad the Beefeaters salmon is a hit  I think we got that tip from KT and Buckwheat.

In Canada, I buy Pure Bites freeze=dried chicken in the dog section @ Wal Mart. $9.77 for a 4.9 oz bag.
It's the only way I can get my civvie to eat wet food and DC loves it for treats.

If you think the freeze dried chicken is kitty crack, watch out for the salmon. We've got Wildside, but I just saw the Beefeaters rand at Petsmart. They have freeze dried shrimp too. :o I get the PrimeBites freeze dried chicken dog treats from PetsMart too, almost as cheap as the King wholesale. I dice it into smaller cubes, easy to cut w/ a decent thin knife.

Cleo (GA) used to love the dried anchovies from the Asian market, be sure to get the unsalted ones. And a good smell proof container.

Ahhh, Ann, I never thought about giving the anchovies there......hummmmm...guess I'll try that next time. Thanks!!

I work for Three Dog Bakery so Kazi gets their We Pity The Kitty treats because my discount is great--- there are 2 flavors; salmon and chicken. She seems to prefer the salmon but I try to alternate them so that she doesn't get sick of them. They're $5 for about an oz...so a little more expensive than some of the others, but if you have a local bakery near you I would think you would save a bit from not paying shipping.

Deb and Spot:

Ginger is no longer with us as of last Monday...

I am looking for good low carb treats for her non-diabetic brothers, Babibear and Lucky to avoid them becoming diabetic.
I will try the freeze dried chicken.
