Low carb dry food

My senior kitty Percy was diagnosed with diabetes in July of 2025. Initially I was feeding my cats Purina sensitive skin and stomach turkey formula but decided to switch over to low-carb dry food to give my cat a shot at lowering his blood glucose numbers. My cats seem to prefer dry food over wet.

I have tried both Dr. Elseys clean protein chicken and Young Again zero mature. Percys numbers dropped to an acceptable level after struggling for months to control his diabetes, however neither of these foods seem to be agreeing with him. He often has loose stools or extremely smelly stools.

I understand that ideally I would be feeding wet food daily to my cats, but as stated above they will only accept it so many times in one week. Are there any other dry food recommendations for a cat with an extra sensitive stomach?

There are not many low carb dry foods. The two we most frequently recommend are the one's you've tried. You could see about giving Percy S. boulardii. It's a probiotic that does a great job of controlling for loose stools/diarrhea.

There are a couple other dry foods that come to mind, Wysong and I think Ziwi Peak has some that are low carb.

Did you do the food switch slowly when you went to the Elsey’s and YA? How about wet food brands, have you tried different ones?

You can tried air dried (Ziwi Peak is one) or freeze dried raw. Some cats get enough crunch on the freeze dried to keep them happy. And the freeze dried comes in many different protein types. He may benefit from getting a protein type he's never had before (lamb, rabbit, venison, duck as some examples).
