Low Carb Dry Food Issue

I received a free sample of Dr. Elsey's cleanprotein chicken recipe in the mail. My plan was to see if Coco would even try it. If it meets with her approval, I planned to use a few kibbles as a blood test treat since she's so finicky about freeze-dried treats. Well ... my plan may have backfired. Since the initial taste test yesterday, she isn't remotely interested in wet food. And she's been drinking out of the water bowl - not a lot - but more than usual. I don't want to throw Coco out of remission and am obviously concerned. I will be testing when I get home from work. Could just a few bites of dry kibble, even low carb, cause a surge in her thirst?

I wouldn't think so, Kerri, provided it was only a few pieces of kibble. Is she not eating any wet food now?

Perhaps Coco's inner kibble monster was reawakened. You might have to just tough it out till she realizes that's not what her main food is like any more. The apparent thirst could be due to not having gotten any moisture from food since she went on strike for kibble. But I'm just guessing here.

Do you think she would eat the dry kibble with water added to it? I started back giving Bama two or three tablespoons of Dr. Elsey's Clean Protein per day but I wait until he has eaten most of his wet food and add 25 or so pieces to what's left in his food bowl and pour some water over it. I don't worry about the lack of moisture from the kibble given that he eats 2 cans of 3 oz. wet per day plus up to 2 oz. of added water to each meal. He is kind of meh about the wet but really crazy about the Elsey's. I want him to still have some joy in life from his food.

it was no more than a teaspoon. Thankfully when I got home from work, she had eaten some, not much but some, of her wet food. She's still looking expectantly for kibble to magically appear.

You're probably onto something here. The Kibble Monster is real - much like the sugar dragon when I was on whole30. She apparently realized wet was better than nothing while I was at work. But I sure don't want her thirst to take off.

That's a great idea! I hadn't thought about adding water. Food should be enjoyed. Even when you're a furry and have four legs.

Dusty stopped drinking water completely after i put him on wet food. My civie still drinks a little but he's always loved his water. I could see how some dry kibble might cause some thirst, cats only need a little moisture but that little moisture makes a huge difference when not there as in dry kibble. I take it Dr. Elsey's dry kibble is low carb? I'd be scared to jeopardize her remission for a treat. Be careful!!

Dr. Elsey's kibble is extraordinarily low carb, which is the only reason I even considered it. But between Coco's renewed water intake and turning up her nose at her perfectly fine wet food, I'm not sure it's worth the risk.
