Low Blood Sugar?!

Ok, we just came home yesterday. Was prescribed ProZinc 2 units 2x per day. Did our first dose last night @8pm and again this morning at 8am. She is eating plenty. She started acting a bit lethargic this afternoon so I took her blood sugar and it was 36. That freaked me out so I took it 2 more times: 36 then 39. I also took mine (I'm a mild diabetic and my #'s were normal for my after meal #'s so I knew the #'s I were getting for her were accurate).

Called the vet and they want me to do the following: Check #'s at 8pm. If <200, do nothing, >200 administer 1 unit. Check again at 11pm and once again at 8am and report all 3 #'s to them in the morning. Someone mentioned that 1 unit of ProZinc seems like a lot and to check here.

I checked her #'s again after 1.5 hours and they were up to 65.

Thanks for your help!

Thank you! This is so trying. I'm scared to death something is going to happen to her because of something I did wrong :( I'm so glad I have a meter to check her.

Hi Elizabeth!! What a scary thing! So glad you caught that!! 30's are definitely too low!!

I don't use ProZinc, so I only know a little about it, but the general rule used here is if they're under 200, they don't get anything...especially until you've got some data on how Sarah responds to both food and insulin.

It will be really helpful for you to set up our spreadsheet to keep track of her numbers. Here's "How to Create a Spreadsheet" instructions. If you have trouble with it, let us know!

I'm so glad you're home testing....I hate to think what might have happened if you hadn't caught that!

How's she doing tonight?

She's up and moving around, purring, arching her back when we pet her, basically acting like my Sarah. She kinda hung out under my bed all morning and didn't have much fight in her when I pulled her out which prompted me to check her.

Thank you all for your help. Im great at managing myself and my oldest daughter & second yougest daughter's diabetes but managing Sarah's has been a roller coaster this last week! I really don't know what I'd do without this site!

You will get up to speed fast, especially since you already know a lot about diabetes. Feline diabetes is really much the same - home monitoring, proper foods. And always check Sarah's glucose before giving insulin.
