Love Auction for Jeddie

And also for DCIN (Mary and Alberto) and a Doberman rescue group (and I am forgetting some, I think).

I don't frequent FB much so I don't know how to link stuff to my page or any of that, but the auction is on Melissa Wilson's page. Melissa (Missi) was kind enough to offer to include Jeddie in this month's auction and Venita let me know about that.

Anyway, I donated 8 items that I knit (well, one is crocheted), so this is my first foray into donating items I knit for charity auctions, even though I am the charity! I put myself about $850 in the hole with Jeddie's vet bills not covered by the chip in, so that is what the proceeds are going to.

This is just an FYI post.

I truly wish people would quit just assuming that everyone's on Facebook - I don't DO facebook and will never do facebook for personal reasons, very strong belief of 'something's wrong' there. I can't even go there without having a terrible feeling deep inside. I know there are many others that feel the same way. It keeps the rest of us completely out of any loop and doesn't let us support things like this.

Can someone think of another way to do things like this? I'd LOVE to see your things Sheila!

Understood. I don't use my name on Facebook, for similar reasons. That's not "allowed" under Facebook rules, tough cookies. I've been online far too long to put my real name "out there." Facebook has duped a lot of young people in to revealing personal info and then you have the opposite, a lot of people misrepresenting themselves. I may use a moniker, but I do not misrepresent who I am otherwise, I just don't reveal much. As Fox Mulder would say, "Trust no one."

I am pressed for time this morning, but maybe someone else can contact Melissa about this. I looked on DCIN and only found the link to Melissa's Facebook. Maybe DCIN can set up something. Sheila, the head wrap and "beanies" are very very nice.

Lyersa, in some ways I agree with you. I only have a FB page to connect with old friends - it hasn't been as big a benefit as I would have liked. The key is to not put personal info on there. I think Vicky has a FB page under a pseudonym and not her real name. Then you just have to stay on top of their privacy policy and make sure you opt OUT of things like tracking your on line movements.

I do not know if there are other online auctioning sites that are, somewhat, private. Probably, but you would have to register for them in order to bid. And people have etsy pages to sell their stuff, but those are set prices and not auctions. Other than that, I don't know what the answer is.

You might be able to see the items by going to Melissa's page, but I am not sure about that. There is another site where my knitting is posted, just for project information, called Ravelry. I don't know how much of the site, if any, you can view if not a member (membership is free, but you need to get email confirmation to join). My Ravelry name is: lacesheknits.

Exactly nothing. Same as those not logged in as a fake facebook user.

Sheila why not post your own pics of the items here?

You can give us more commentary on the treasures. It might help those interested here to get motivated to jump through the hoops to set up their fake facebook page so they can bid. Maybe fake is the wrong word. As Vicky put it, perhaps "unrevealing" facebook page is better terminology. ;-)

OK - here are my items with descriptions, minimum bid (based on cost of yarn) and shipping. I hope that when you click on the thumbnails they take you to the larger photo. All of these I made for myself and then either never wore or only wore once. Each item will be freshly hand washed prior to shipping. There might be a few cat hairs knitted in  (if I'm being honest).

Thanks Sheila those are amazing. All kinds of yarns. If we can get some eyeballs on these they will be gone in no time.

So Long gauntlet mitts would be for driving? Flying or hot air ballooning?

(just keep clicking to "view all sizes" for high resolution)

My grandmothers and great-grandmother did a lot of knitting and crocheting. My mom was into the yarn but does very little sewing or knitting.

Isn't is somewhat unusual for younger people to be into it? Especially with the short attention spans and distractions of this day and age. @-)

Sheila how long does it take to make, say gauntlet mitts? And how do you ever keep the cats out of the yarn?

I made the long mitts for my office that had the AC blasting right over my desk - so, you go to work in short sleeve because it's 90 degrees outside and then sit at a computer under an air vent and freeze to death. My forearms ached and my hands were numb.

So they work best for that sort of use. I have a couple of other pairs I like better and use them in the winter for computer work, reading, and even knitting. Your palm is covered in the fabric so you would not have a good grip on a steering wheel or yoke in a cockpit. I always wore a batting glove to fly, but just on my left hand. Your right hand is busy with the radios and such. My flight instructor used to tease me about it because it was like Michael Jackson and his one glove.

It would take me about two weeks of "free-time" knitting to make those, or a pair of socks (they are made from sock yarn) - that's commuting on the bus and watching TV in the evening.

Knitting is actually very popular. It had a big surge of popularity about 8 years ago with famous people admitting to knitting (and crocheting). I think most knitters start in their 20s though. The Ravelry site I mentioned earlier has 2 million members world wide. You can post your projects, find patterns to buy or download free. I have been knitting since I was about 11 - so, a very long time.

And it shows. Even from the pictures those items look amazing, like something you would see in a high end department store. The yarns you use sound amazing, Alpaca and Mohair!

BTW, what's an "eyelash" scarf? Is it called that because the fibers stick out, wispy-like?

I am not sure I understand how to bid on these. If you post your bid then everyone is going to know. So how do I bid?

Yes, on the eyelash question - the yarn is called eyelash yarn.

I don't know about the bidding? Maybe that is something you could ask on Missi's FB page?

Very nice! Being (originally) from the Chicago area, I wished I had those cowls as a teenager, walking 7 blocks to the bus stop with wet hair in the winter (Okay, not the smartest thing to do!) Truly a recipe for strep throat/bronchitus/etc! Now that I live in the south, my scarf needs are different... but I love the eyelash scarf, and need some leggings to go with the gloves, as the AC unit is directly over my desk! BRRRRR!!!!! IN my other office, I used to have a furry cat bed my mom sent, with a blanket inside, under my desk to try to keep my feet warm!
