I am currently traveling and my pet sitter informed me on Wednesday, May 9 that my 13 yo diabetic cat had gone missing. As far as I know, she has been without food and insulin for 3-4 days. There have been no sightings of her. I'm wondering if there is hope that she could still be ok. Our vet is on notice, but no one has brought her in. Thank you for any assistance.

Re: Lost Diabetic Cat

Has the sitter looked in every nook and cranny in the house? My sister lost her cat for 3 days and it was found in a dresser drawer, angry, hungry but otherwise okay. Do you live in a city, or more wide-open spaces?

Re: Lost Diabetic Cat

The cat was sighted outside twice, but the sitter was unable to get to the cat in time. She has also "torn apart" (her words) the house to look for the cat. Thank you for the suggestion.

Re: Lost Diabetic Cat

Has the shelter also been notified in case someone finds her and turns her in? I think she may be able to find food on her own, but it's the lack of insulin that is the big concern. I'm hoping you hear some good news soon.

Re: Lost Diabetic Cat

This is a test post to see if I can get a post on here. My replies never show up immediately after I post them.

Re: Lost Diabetic Cat

Shelters have been notified and she is tagged. I'm hoping for good news, but fearing the worst at this point.

Re: Lost Diabetic Cat

Ok. Maybe I'm too long winded, and this thing times out . . .

If you are going to be gone for several more days, I suggest asking the sitter to put out a Havaheart trap. www.havahart.com/store/live-animal-traps
Tell the sitter to put food and water in the trap and only in the trap, but DO NOT set the trap. Keep putting food and water in it for about 3 days. Then, on the fourth day, set the trap and check it frequently.

I suspect your cat decided that it is one thing for your to treat the cat for diabetes, but this new person is to be avoided. The cat is probably sticking close to home, but raiding the dog and cat food of the houses around you. Cats bodies are surprisingly tolerant of high blood glucose for short periods of time. You will probably come home to a hungry cat who may have lost some weight, but is otherwise fine.

I'll be sending good vibes your way. Good luck.

Re: Lost Diabetic Cat

If she's a rural, outdoor cat, hopefully she has been hunting mice and birds to eat. And, since too much insulin is worse than no insulin, as long as she's eating, she should be okay for a while, shouldn't she? I'm praying for the best! I feel so bad for you, being away from home and worrying/trying to deal with this long distance. I hope she is found/comes home soon! Do let us know!

Re: Lost Diabetic Cat

Thank you all! The trap idea is one I will get on immediately since I am traveling in SE Asia (12,000 miles away from home) until the end of May. Also, she's an indoor cat that dashed out a door, so I'm not sure she's an experienced hunter/mouser. Shelters, vet and animal control have all been notified.

Re: Lost Diabetic Cat

I agree that she can go without insulin for a while. Most cats are diabetic for weeks before they are diagnosed and start insulin treatments.

The have-a-heart trap idea is a great one. And Dale's reasoning about how the cat feels about the sitter vs. you makes sense too.

Re: Lost Diabetic Cat

Where is "home" Maybe there are some FDMB members nearby that can help look for her? Just a thought. I would be frantic to be away from home and know my cat is "out there" somewhere. And maybe the sitter would welcome help if it is available. And what is kitties name? We can all pray for her at least.

Sending "go home" vibes out there.

Since she's an indoor cat, have your sitter put her dishes of food and water outside whatever would be the most likely door she would go to (nearest her sightings). If she's hanging around the house, hopefully the familiar scent of her favorite food would attract her. And do follow up with the trap, as well as posting your general geographical area in case there are other board members nearby who could help.

You've done a lot so far...something is bound to pan out!

Re: Lost Diabetic Cat

I live in Oxford, Ohio (near Cincinnati). My pet sitter has enlisted the help of my work colleagues, which I really appreciate. My diabetic cat is named Chicken (long story) and unfortunately, she takes after her name. I'm feeling hopeful about the traps and better due to the information you all have suggested. Thanks for any good vibes, thoughts, prayers, etc. I picked her up 13 years ago from an Albertson's in Seattle, Washington. She was cross-eyed and the runt of the litter and I loved her immediately.

Re: Lost Diabetic Cat

I'll be praying for Chicken to find the food and water that's set out, and be home inside the house, soon.
Cats do not usually go very far, and she's probably somewhere around the house or nearby.
I'd put up some posters neaby, just in case one of your neighbors have seen her, in the middle of the night looking for food, or something.

Best Of Luck, and Fingers Crossed.

Contact Tri State CART Tri-State Companion Animal Rescue Team - while they normally do disaster response, they may be able to assist. If they can help, they would need a full description of the cat, aside from cross-eyed & 13 years old.

Re: Lost Diabetic Cat (Update)

Thank you all for your support. I was hoping for good news, but someone has reported that my little Chicken was hit by a car not far from my house. They identified her from a flyer they had been given. She was a sweet, loving cat. She will be missed.

Thanks again for all the help. This has been a really rough time being so far away and unable to do things myself. I know she would have come back if I had been there and that is the most difficult thing.

Re: Lost Diabetic Cat

I am so sorry to hear about Chicken. I was so praying that she would come home safe and sound. (((HUGS))) to you for dealing with this so far away from home.

Re: Lost Diabetic Cat

My heart breaks for you. I'm so sorry to hear that. I hope it was very quick, and she never knew what happened.

Re: Lost Diabetic Cat

I am so sorry. I saw this thread yesterday and clicked on it today hoping for good news. I always worry about my kitties when I am gone on trips, so I know it must be terrible for this to happen while you were gone. :( My heart goes out to you.

Re: Lost Diabetic Cat

So sorry. You did all the right things, called all the appropriate folks... I'm so sorry they weren't all able to locate her in time.

I've had pets get out of the house twice when out of town. It is such a helpless feeling. Fortunately one came home a week later, and the other as soon as he saw me. The unfamiliarity of a pet-sitter is a hard thing for some pets to adapt to. I once sat in a friend's home w/ the door propped open for 3 hours, waiting for their free-roaming dog to come back inside. It's difficult for them to trust a stranger.

Peace and comfort to you and your family in this sad time. God Bless.

Re: Lost Diabetic Cat

I clicked hoping for a good report and was pained to read your update. I am so so sorry for your loss. You did absolutely everything you could and Chicken was fortunate to have a mama who loved her so.

Praying you feel God's comfort in a mighty way tonight and in the days to come -
