Lori isn't doing test kits anymore

Lori (Lori and Tom) sent all the testing kits she had to me. Nice, huh? She said with Tom gone, she just doesn't want to continue.

Anyway, please make sure kit requests come to me, not Lori. I do ask that recipients register for the FDMB just so we can continue to help them out.

Actually, I have been in touch with Lori and I got a different sense from her as
to why she will not be continuing with the kits. But, whatever....I'm not
gonna rock the boat anymore than it already has been.

I have been waiting to see closure on this.

You see, I have skin in this game, as do many others here who have sent Lori
supplies in the past. And to think that so much value might not be used, was
very upsetting. I have sent at least 50 meters, hundreds of rice socks, and cash for
strips, etc. I composed the "How to Use a Rice Sock" blurb that is included within
the kits. (Lori's, and Cindy's before that).

Lori was not the only one affected and hurt by the recent brouhaha, if you know what
I mean.

By the way, Lori's "Kits for Kats" site is no longer active, so if you have it linked
in your signature, you should remove it.
 
Many people are sending kits, toys, and rice socks. I do not feel that it is particularly necessary to publicly thank everyone but Lori asked me to give her credit publicly for sending the supplies she had. Thus, I have done that. I thank people who have made donations to the FDMB, too - that paid for all the postage costs of Lori sending the kits.

The FDMB Pet Diabetes Home Test Kits are NOT the same as Lori's kits; they may contain different items and have different instructions. Additionally, to receive FDMB kits, the recipient must be a registered member of the FDMB and is asked to post about their testing experiences.

Please don't rock the boat anymore about sore feelings. I quoted the reason Lori stopped doing Newbie Kits that she gave me. I had offered to sponsor her web site and to list her Newbie Kit site on the Feline Diabetes web site. She didn't want that. I'm sure she says different things to both of us.

Lori doesn't do "Newbie kits" anymore and has asked me to announce that. FDMB does provide Pet Diabetes Test Kits as a service to FDMB members; I do not send out Lori's "Newbie Kits". End of that discussion.

We have tons of meters now but not so many test strips as many donated ones are past their expiration dates. If anyone wants to donate toward buying new test strips or or postage costs for those who can't afford it, that generosity would be greatly appreciated. To donate, simply click the donation button and indicate in the PayPal notes section that the donation should be directed to Pet Diabetes Home Testing Kits (PDHTK).

please note that contour test strips can be used well past expiration date (i did, and verified against BG readings taken at vet.
some meters won't accept expired strips, but not contour meters. pls don't toss the contour ones.
if you won't use them for potential liability reasons, i think some members here would be happy to take the expired ones off your hands.
thank you for doing the test kits, rebecca. when i was a scared newbie i really appreciated the meter/strips an fdmb member sent me.
 
I definitely won't be tossing any meters. Unfortunately, all control solutions (these are older meters) are 1 to FIVE years out of date. Very few test strips were included. Do you have any data about using strips past expiration dates for the Contour meters, especially how long past expiration they are good and how this was determined?
 
no data (i might be able to dredge some up but doubt i noted "expired" on my spreadsheet). but i know for sure cindy & mousie and i bought contour strips close to expiration on ebay to save money, and used them at least 6 months past expiration date. because cleo was being seen by a specialist for about a year and a half we compared readings during that time period and my data was not statistically different from hers.
[this discussion is only re Contour test strips. i never had to buy control solution so i have no idea re that.]
 
My nephew has type 1 diabetes, and my sister said they have used the Freestyle Freedom Strips well beyond the expiration date. He used to test frequently, so I'm sure they did some comparisons. I did do a comparison on myself with some that where 5 years past the expiration date, and they were accurate. Not sure I would recommend using them on a newly dx kitty, but maybe for a kitty that's been around awhile and has a lot of data they would be fine.

I know, I worry about sending out strips marked expired to new people. Like food, I figured the expiration dates were somewhat arbitrary. I used to volunteer at a free medical clinic and we loved getting "expired" medications to give to people, knowing full well they were still fine.
 
fwiw, i've also used freestyle test strips well past the expiration date with no problems. not the newly designed freestyle lite ones but the regular freestyle ones.

but yeah, i never sent out expired strips in the kits when i was doing them either. always thought it might lead to a credibility issue if we were sending out old stuff. what i did do with them is donate them to current members who could and would use them, to those fostering diabetics, or to those who might buy them at a greatly reduced price, using that money to get newer strips or other supplies needed
 
I'd also be interested in whether the control solution stays good and for how long. I have an old contour one I was afraid was useless. I've used ketonestix that were past their expiration and compared them to a new bottle and they were ok but she was negative. I don't know what would have happened if she wasn't.

I had an expired one, called the company, and they sent a new one for free :) They might do so for you as well, if you still have it and can read them the number. Rebecca they might send you a handful if you called and explained? They want people to use their meters, and the humans buy the test strips so I don't think they care about them being used on cats.
 
i think if you told the newbie he/she could have more strips if he/she didn't mind expired ones you'd still get interest. if you buy strips at the store it's over a dollar per strip and of course you make mistakes and waste strips when you are learning.

Glad you said this! I just gave some Nasicourt to a 82 yo coworker, but she didn't want them as they were expired (3). They aggrivate my sinus, so I guess they will go to waste. My my expired Halls throat drops won't! :-D
