Liz, it's a baby wood duck. I was watching the mom and four babies, and then one broke away and swam for the shore. Apparently to retrieve sibling #5 whose name must be "dopey".... He was hiding in the bushes, and I didn't even see him when I took the first picture. It wasn't till I got home and loaded the pictures on my computer that I "found him" hiding. There's a series of three pics in my "nature moments" thread in Community. In the 1st pic, this little guy is to the far right of the shot.

Rhiannon, this was at a place called "Cypress Wetlands" in Port Royal, SC. It's about 20 miles away from where I live. It's the most amazing place for bird pics. Hundreds if not thousands of birds hang out there. I probably have a couple hundred pics from there on my Flickr page. I think I've been there four times in the past couple of weeks and have taken well over 1000 photos. :-D

In the bigger picture over in community, it looks like those 3 hovering Green Herons are looking for a tasty morsel to eat. But the Wood Ducks are safe, they're just stirring up the muck to provide goodies for the Herons.

Awe how cute, my daughter just sent me a picture of there baby geese the parents have tried for 5 years but would loose them as eggs because of other creatures this time they started them off in the incubator. Just those things that make you say awe

Those are actually "tri-colored" herons, also known as Louisiana Herons.... but yeah, especially the one closest to the ducks looks like he's sizing them up! I was more concerned about the gators nearby. nailbite_smile. The momma duck was pretty feisty too. Any time she got close to another bird, she quacked pretty loudly and chased them away. :-D

Thanks for the smile! For me, there is nothing cuter than baby ducks, and when they are in a line following Mama and/or Papa Duck, it breaks my cute-o-rama meter!
