I am looking to change vets for our cat to someone who is more of a specialist in diabetes. Minimum criteria is someone who would just be OK with us doing our own thing at home. Better would be someone who supports home testing and has expertise in how to get cats regulated and so can guide us in adjusting her insulin, etc.

We live near the PA/MD/DE border.

Thanks so much for any leads!

You're in the North East/RS area, correct? Would Middletown, DE be too far for you?

Hi there

I'm in Baltimore and use this practice. Although I no longer have a diabetic kitty and the Dr that treated BK moved back to her home state of Kentucky, I trust all the vets who work there and although I don't know that any of them are experts in FD I'm sure your minimum criteria can be met there.

Here is the link to my vet in Middletown. I found him after my former vet and I disagreed over just about everything related to FD! I really like him and his staff and, most importantly, I TRUST him. Feel free to tell him Squallie's owner, Lucy, referred you to him. When I called the first time he wasn't busy (he'd just opened his new practice) and was happy to do a phone interview; if you ask to have him call back when he isn't busy I'm sure he will do the same for you!

Thank you so much!!! :)

You are very welcome! Let me know if you try him, I'd love to hear your take on him.
I got the chance to talk with Dr. Heller on the phone today. Very nice guy, thank you for the recommendation. :) He hesitated to say that he has any detailed knowledge of how to get a diabetic cat regulated but even just from a short conversation with him he knew more than I've heard from my current vet. And he has no problem with testing at home. So if I'm not able to find a vet nearer to home, I'll be taking Abby for an appointment with him in about a month prior to needing her next prescription refill. Thank you again! :)

Oh, I'm so glad you called him! I think he's wonderful, all my cats like him, and his staff is great, too. As soon as Squallie sees one of the girls, Kate, he starts to purr! I know it's a bit of a haul for you, but if you do end up going with him I really think you'll be happy. :):):)
