Hello,
We're new to this Web site. Our 9 year old male cat, Midnight, was diagnosed in December 2012 with diabetes. I'm not thrilled with our vet, as I continually ask her about changing his diet and purchasing a blood glucose monitor for home, and she keeps putting me off. I've been trying word of mouth and looking for reviews on line to find a good vet who is well-versed in diabetic care of cats...no luck so far. We live in Shrewsbury, MA. I'd like to find someone local. I will NOT go to the Cat and Bird clinic on Park Ave!

Also, I'm trying to find clinical reviews of this "natural medicine" Dia-IonX™ for Cats. Does anyone have experience with this medicine?

Lastly, I know we should get rid of the dry cat food, and I've just swiched to Californina Natural - Pure & Simple, but am wondering if there's a better dry cat food out there. I've looked at the list and see one that has higher protein but alos a lot higher fat so didn't think that would be a good choice. Midnight has never been over weight. He initally lost weight but seems to have returned to a healthy weight at the moment.

Thank you for your help,
Midnight and Mary

You might want to add your general location to the title of your post so you get the right eyes, we have several members in MA

Hi Mary,
I grew up in Grafton, but never had a pet before moving away to South Carolina. I was just looking online though. Have you checked out Healthy Paws in Westborough? One of their vets is listed as a endocrinologist.

I know Tufts is right in Grafton, but I've been told they don't do "vet referrals" by another member who called them recently. The vets at Healthy Paws all graduated from Tufts, it looks like.

I have taken my cats to the Rte 20 Animal Clinic as long as I can remember. Dr. Kotsopoulos is not very experienced in feline diabetes (until I came along with all the testing and spreadsheets ), and gave his input but did not argue with my treatment regime or choices, and was surprised and thrilled when my Donovan went OTJ. Dr. K has the integrity to let you know when something is beyond his clinic's capabilities (cancer, cardio eval, major dental, renal disease, 24/7 monitoring) - so I took my cats to Angell in Boston for specialized treatment. I have also gone to VCA Northboro for surgery when one of my civvies developed a malignant tumor, and then to Angell for continued treatment. VCA Northboro is a decent place with a nice staff and very close to Shrewsbury, but I cannot speak to their general practice.

See my signature link Vet Interview Topics for questions to ask.

Also, some vets are trainable. You might print out the AAHA Feline Diabetes guidelines Tell your vet (ever so sincerely) that you know how difficult it must be to stay up on every disease for every animal so you thought you'd save her some time by providing this contemporary veterinary journal article.

And of course an up to date vet would support hometesting and feeding a low carb canned or raw diet. Phrased that way, how can they disagree?
