Need a timed feeder for Pixie.
He is on Day 5 of his OTJ trial.
His BG is high in the am due to no feeding during the night hours.
Fed him at 2am last night and we had a beautiful green 82 BG this am.

There is usually someone around here to feed am, afternoon and evening.
But I am wondering if I should get a large feeder just in case we won't be here.

What do you use? Do you like it or why not?
I hate buying something and not having it be exactly what i want.

I have the 2 compartment one by petsmate. http://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-5-Meal-Electronic-Pet-Feeder/dp/B000GEWHNS/?tag=felinediabetesfdmb-20

The thing I didn't like about it is that it's pretty quiet ( except my dh can hear the timer so I can't have it in our bedroom) .
It doesn't make any noise when it opens. I would have liked a little ding or something to wake up my cat when it opens if she wasn't there but I find that she keeps coming back to see if it's open
or she would lay there and wait.

I use it when we are traveling mostly .
I thought the 5 slot would be too much. And I would have to put treats in the extra compartments or something, if it opened and had nothing in it.... my cat would quit going near it.
I hear the 5 slot one makes a louder whirling noise when it moves.

I use the 5 compartment one (same as Rhiannons link above) and love it:) I tried several others (without food in them to see how they worked, thank goodness they were returnable) and didn't like that I couldn't set them to a specific time (they just had a dial) or that they seemed flimsy, but the Petsafe 5 is sturdy, and digital so you can set as many (or as little) exact times as needed. It won't turn to a new compartment unless you have another time set, you can program in up to 10 times of day (I guess you'd have to add food halfway through if you use that many but it's nice that you can pre-program it and it's set for all time, mine is set to 1am and 4am and I just add in day ones when needed for work days). There is room for a small icepack but only under the main open compartment and the dishes are deep so I got little glass prep bowls to bring the food higher, Chyna hates squishing her whiskers even if it's to get at food cat(2)_steam . It does have a loud-ish turning sound, but it didn't scare her, once she found out it contained food...now when Chyna hears it she goes straight for it so it doesn't bother me at all

I have the Petmate 5 one and it works great. A few times it hasn't turned, but it's pretty rare and I think it's due to me not putting the bowl on properly after washing b/c that's the only time it's happened.

I mostly need it for during the night. That 2am feeding to keep his AMBG looking all
pretty and green.
It would be nice if it made a noise when it opened.
I have 2 labs and worry about them getting there first or knocking it around if I am not home.

this is the one I have, mentioned above. I got it from this place, as it was the cheapest:

I have been using it every day since the summer of 2011. Cold portion on left (around an ice cube), frozen protion on right, cold pack underneath. He loves it. The only negative is you can't set the precise time it will open.

Have you tried freezing some to be nibbled as it thaws, and using baby gates to keep the dogs out of that area?
Or, you might get a playpen and put the food in there so the dogs can't get it.

Pixie is part manx. He's got some stubby short legs and couldn't jump into a playpen.
We froze his food a couple times. He waited next to it for it to thaw and kept meowing.
I am trying to work on an area where the dogs can't get to, but Pixie can. Sure wish
he could jump.

Glad I saw this thread! Benjamin currently has the Petsafe 2 compartment feeder, but he has learned to beat it into submission to get the food. He actually hammers on it until the tops pop open! I just went ahead and ordered the 5 compartment feeder hoping that will work, at least while I am on vacation next month and my son is taking care of him.
