Hi all, does anyone in the Northeast PA area (NJ, Upstate NY ok too) have a good internal medicine specialist they would recommend? Jack has been diabetic since 2022 and his apparent insulin resistance has exceeded the regular vet's experience/willingness to treat. Thanks in advance!

Had your cat been tested for acromegaly? I would be really surprised if he doesn't have it. My cat CC had it... At her most I think she was up to about 13 u. My vet kept saying no no no it's too rare. I kept telling her she had it and she finally agreed to test her for it and no surprise she did. At that point she finally stopped giving me the side eye about how much her dose was. She did recommend I see an IM but I opted to just do the dosing myself... And gradually her dose came down. Looks like you are doing great testing.

I live in Western New Jersey, and have heard that Crown Veterinary Specialists is very good. I have never used them.
For my diabetic cat, I used both Penn State School of Veterinary Medicine and Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in Tinton Falls and was very pleased with both of those.
Hi Dyana,
Thanks for these recommendations- I'll definitely look into Penn State, you are the second person to recommend them. I appreciate your input- hope all is well with your kitties.

Hi Janet,
Yes, Jack was tested for acromagaly and IAA back in 2022, about 7 months after he was diagnosed/started insulin. He tested negative for both. At the time I figured it was his diet- he has taken a LONG time to convert to pate only and still insists on eating at least some (1/4 cup) of LC kibble (Elsey's pure protein mixed with Ziwi peak dried chicken) before he will even consider eating wet food. Back in 2022 when we did the original testing, he was up to 8.5 units of glargine and now we're on 11. I was told that the assay was changed for the IGF-1 so I have been banging my head against a wall trying to get that test redone, as well as tested for Cushing's (even though he really has no 'common' symptoms of Cushing's). I pretty much got the 'your cat needs and IM specialist' email from my vet clinic, so that's why I'm looking for one. My problem is I have a HUGE distrust of ALL vets at this point, and basically ZERO confidence that ANY of them are really interested in treating my cat as opposed to making a ton of $ off of him. Thanks for your input here.
BTW, I think we used to chat in the Prozinc group when my first sugar cat Mopem was still here. I see CC passed- I'm sorry. Hope you have been well otherwise. :bighug:

Hi Christine I hope you can find a great internal medicine specialist :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:
I gave up- could never find one I could afford, and who I felt would treat Jack without bankrupting me with tests and charging $500 just to walk in the door. I'm just trying to save as much money as possible, and will eventually get the IGF-1 redone- at this point we are down to 8.5u so who knows.....
