Hi guys,

Mocha has been off insulin now for 6 weeks (including trial) and is doing fantastic! She is more playful and energetic then we remember her being as a kitten.

Today I dropped off a binder of her monthly spreadsheets as well as articles on the Tilly Protocol, hypoglycemic episodes and the useful video links off of this site to our vet. She later called me back and we talked a bit about how we got mocha regulated, though she isn't to comfortable with the numbers mocha is giving off on her own. She still believes they might be a little to low and to keep an eye out for any hypo episodes she might have.

At any rate, she wanted to know if we could make her copies of the articles in the binder as well as mocha's SS which I said we could, but I'm wondering if there are any more articles out there that would be helpful to her?

Thanks guys!

How can your vet think your cat might go hypo if he is no longer on insulin?

Does your cat have any other underlying health issues?

P.S. I also want to go back to my vet armed with a bunch of info, so I will be watching this thread. What stuff did you give to your vet in the binder?

Thanks Debby, I have bookmarked that page and will go back to it for references ..

Beggargirl, I'm not sure why my vet believes mocha's numbers are to low. I have checked out other online sites and where mocha is surfing is perfectly acceptable. No, mocha does not have any other underlying health issues and is more active now then she was as a kitten.

In the binder she currently has is each month of mocha's SS, all 22 of them! Also included was the article on the Tilly Protocol, all the links off of this site that helped with home testing, etc, and all the info found on hypo's and what to look for and what to have on hand.

I'm trying to get a few more articles printed that she may be interested in reading about.

I find it positively bizarre that your vet would be worried about those numbers with no insulin on board...that really defies logic! I'm very glad that she is interested in more info, etc. but I would have thought this part a no-brainer.

little late getting to this post...but if Mocha is running too low then so is Maxwell since her spreadsheet looks a lot like his. And actually her numbers are pretty much on par with what the other 10 civies here run, with the exception of Lady Jane Grey who runs slightly higher, but she is going through a growth spurt now that she is being fed a decent diet and not trying to survive on the streets.

But I also just recently put together a packet for our vets on how we got to were we are with Maxwell. The things that I included with the stuff I took to our vets' was, the stickies on the 3 perferred insulins PZI, Lantus and Levermir, copies of all 3 of binky's food lists and then made up one off those lists that only included those foods under 10% carbs, the info on hypos and how to treat them. A videos on home testing both from the ear and from the paw. Also a disc with a copy of the Then and Now video that I did for DCIN so they could see how dramatically a cat can turn around with proper care. As well as a copy of Maxwell's spreadsheet. I also gave them a "business card" with all my contact information on it to give to anyone that wanted hands on help learning to test, as well as the information for the website here, catinfo.org, and Diabetic Cat Care and DCIN. Then I added a list of sites for folks needing help with vet bills...places like DCIN, IMOM etc. Basically just all the places that we send newbies to read when they first get here. I also have some brochures that I got from Claudia on DCIN which if you would like a couple to give your vet PM your address and I can send you some. I dropped them off at all the vets and shelters in the area here and still have about 15 left over.

Since then Maxwell and I have gone in and given home testing demos to both our vet clinic and our local shelter. I spent a good part of this last week out at our local shelter training the volunteers there how to test ears. Even showed them how to do the kitty burrito and the clothes pin mohawk for difficult kitties.

Congrats on getting Mocha to OTJ and good luck with your vet info packet. Every vet we teach the better for future sugarkitties!

Wow, that is incredible everything that you put together for your vet .. My vet didn't ask for anything specifically, and a lot of what she told me over the phone wasn't quite on par with what we say here. I was surprised she wanted a copy of everything because of what she had mentioned over the phone but maybe she is curious to do more reading?

I'm happy with mocha's numbers .. and more then anything I'm happy with how happy she is .. she's running around the house like a maniac wearing out her little sister. I find toys throughout the house that I know mocha carried around and then dropped off at places .. She is just super lovey and super sweet ...

I should say that this is not mocha's reg. vet, but rather a vet that we encountered when taking our civvie there a few weeks back. She learned of our diabetic cat and then was surprised at the numbers she was giving us. When mocha went OTJ I thought it would be nice to show them exactly what we did with mocha and how we got her to where she is now. That's how all this came about and then she had the chance to look over mocha's binder and called back. Like I said, she had opinions on what they consider "well regulated" and it is much different then what we consider well regulated on this site.

I wonder, is that vet thinking in terms of numbers on an Alphatrak or other pet-specific meter? The numbers you are getting would be a little bit low if obtained on one of those meters, I think, but on a human meter, they aren't low at all.

lol I know the feeling, that is kind of how I got there with our vet. Took one of the civies in and got to talking about Maxwell since they still haven't seen him in the fur yet ( at least not as a patient). When I mentioned he had been off the juice for almost 5 months at the time, my vet just about fell over, first he didn't believe a cat that was just dxed in October at 485 could be off insulin but be off it as long as Maxwell has been...lol So he asked me "what kind of magic fix I knew about that he didn't, as he has had his own diabetic cat now for 6 years and considered keeping her in the high 100s and low 200s well regulated.

Then he got to see Maxwell when we went in to do the home testing demo, I thought I was going to have to arm wrestle him to get to take Maxwell home again! He couldn't believe how playful and happy and heavy Maxwell was. He told me if he hadn't seen the bloodwork he would never have guessed that Maxwell was (1) diabetic and (2) over 10 years old.

Makes you feel really proud when you can teach the vet a trick or two..lol

Oh yeah, Dr. Mac's FD kitty just went OTJ this last weekend. His wife called me to tell me the good news (They were the ones that adopted Athena, when she showed up in my backyard last year).

Jean, I am not sure if she knew we were using a human meter or not. I suppose that would make a difference in how they see the numbers. I should ask that when I take back this other binder.

I'm glad maxwell is doing so wonderful .. Mocha could never be a candidate for home testing demos as shot times around here were chaotic and traumatic every single day, twice a day, for two years ..

And congrats to athena who is now OTJ! What wonderful news to hear!
