Mr. Butts approx 5 yrs old was diagnosed on 6/2/2020 and was prescribed 2 units of Prozinc twice a day and prescribed Royal Canin canned and dry to only eat twice a day. I stayed very strict with what the vet had said and took him back a week later on 06/10/2020 only to find is numbers went up, worse than the first visit and lost another pound and is still hungry all the time. Mr Butt was a big cat (not fat) up until about 2 months ago (couldn't get to a vet because of covid 19). I would say he weighed approx 15+ lbs before he lost his weight down to 8lbs. Even though he is only 8lbs I was told to feed him as an 11 to 12lbs cat due to the fact the vet could tell he was a big cat. Could I get some advise on Royal Canin, he really loves it but I am reading there is a lot of carbs in it. He like fancy feast but not the classic. Would making his food be better if so what would you suggest? is 2 units twice a day of prozinc to much? I have not started home testing yet and have been trusting the vet. I'm heading to Walmart this morning to pick up needed supplies for home testing. I will have to apologize ahead of time because I will probably be a pain and you guys will get sick of hearing from me.

Hello :D I am new here as well (DX 5/8/20). You can never ask too many questions! This condition is complicated and can be so stressful. The more that you know the better you will be able to help your cat. My cat was on a dry food diet and I switched him to wet only (along with my other non-diabetic cat) when I found out how bad it can be for them. I went with Fancy Feast. My cat has a big appetite and the Fancy Feast cans are so tiny so I get a low carb Fancy Feast and a low carb (big can) of 9 lives pate and I just put a spoon or two of the 9 lives in with his two big meals of the day (I put a top on the big can and it lasts me a few days). As long as you pick a wet food under around 10% carbs you should be fine. I use this list when shopping for food:

I am not an expert on dosing by any means. I am still trying to figure this out with my own cat but from what I have gathered, normally they begin around 1 unit twice a day. Good job on deciding to home test! It is super important and you will feel more "in the loop" on what is happening to your cat throughout the day. Home testing will help you to see if your dose is working as well as know for sure if it is safe for you to give your dose before you inject them. Look for a meter with inexpensive testing strips because you will go through a ton!

Welcome to FDMB :) We are so glad you found us! I must say I cannot give dosing advice. (too many years without a diabetic kitty)
I just wanted to say theres a wealth of information here with good people to help you decipher it all. My experience with dry ANYTHING
(ALL dry foods are packed with carbs) Is what kept my Trouble in high numbers. Once we removed that dry things changed dramatically. Along with testing we got rid of the dry and all of a sudden the his numbers were in mid range. I finally felt like we got a handle on this disease called diabetes! Trouble was off insulin a few weeks later.

THAT SAID

Do NOT remove the dry food without serious testing. The removal of dry can drop number dramatically and dangerously. BUT with testing it CAN be a game changer. I say "can" because it might not happen to your cat or any other cat because, ECID (Every Cat Is Different) This is JUST our story.

There are hundred of stories here all made better because of this site. We welcome all new people to set up their signatures and spread sheets to help us help you and Mr. Butts navigate this disease.

Thank you so much. When I got his diagnosis the vet gave me the prescription for Royal canin Glycobalance which of course I bought 24 cans of. After doing some reading here I am a little more than upset to say the least. Like I said Mr Butts is/was a BIG cat,the vet said to only feed him twice a day,but he was still so hungry. I finally peeled the label back on the Royal Canin and it has 84% moisture which is good but, the crude protein is only at 7.5%. that's pretty low isn't it? 2 cans in a 12 hour period just don't seem like enough. What do you think

Thank you for the info on the dry food. What I am doing is giving him a noon snack which is the Royal Canin dry food. I am going to have to start the serious home testing because I have also been mixing some dry in with his canned food at meal time (morning and evening). I'm not seeing much protein in the Royal Canin canned food so I may be looking at different foods. I am going to like it here. It is such a relief to talk with others that have the same problem

I feed Ducote two bigger meals with his shots (a can of FF with a spoon of the 9 lives). I also feed him a small meal (like two spoons of his big can of 9 lives pate food) around mid-cycle (+6). If he is screaming for food I keep little things that I can feed him here and there to satisfy him. For example, I might bake and shred up a chicken breast and put it in a tupperware in the fridge. If he is begging for food at a time when I don't normally feed him I will give him a few pieces of the chicken and it will keep him happy. The little tupperware will last me all week. I also use these as treats for ear pokes throughout the day and this made it to where he hears me unzip his meter and comes running and purring to get his test :cat:

Welcome!!

The main goal right now should be to get your cat to gain some weight back. Diabetic cats can’t process the nutrients in food efficiently so they eat but still lose weight. They also lose weight simply by peeing because there’s sugar in the urine. You need to try to feed him around 300 calories a day. Also feeding only twice a day doesn’t work for most cats. It’s more of a dog routine. My Minnie also lost a ton at first she went down from 17 to 12 but she’s now back to 16. Once you start testing, you can slowly remove the dry food but in the meantime you need to feed him more. Basically if he’s hungry let him eat. Just to give you an idea 300 calories is about 4 cans of fancy feast a day. He’s not eating nearly enough so use up the Royal Canin you have and supplement with FF. We do usually suggest starting with 1 unit but again, I wouldn’t change anything until you can home test. Tagging one of our prozync pros here @Deb & Wink

welcome again! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

FYI, my first vet said the same thing only feed twice a day and that’s how Minnie ended up going down to 12 pounds. Mr. Butts lost almost 1/2 of his body weight and that’s a huge amount for a cat, so the priority needs to be gaining some of that weight back so he doesn’t start to lose muscle mass. Please start feeding more right away :cat:

I am going to start feeding him more effective right now. Thank you so much
