He is home, I think he is a bit brighter, but not eating, so pretty worried. They gave me a pottassium supplement to go in his food. But if he won't eat, it won't help. I am hoping he was just not hungry because of car ride, but he went to bowl then turned away, even tried it with out the supplement. Have to give him shot in 15minutes (lantus), if he doesn't eat I presume his BG will go lower. I called vet, they said to call back if he doesn't eat in 24hrs. But he is pretty fragile now.

Re: Home from the vet but not eating

Have you tried any type of different food or did they tell you he must eat a certain kind of food? My heart goes out to you. Was he eating at the vet and what was he eating there?

Re: Home from the vet but not eating

Is there anything he really likes - tuna or cooked chicken? You can get him started with that he might go on to his regular food. It sounds silly, but sometimes if you feed him off your fingers for a few bites, he'll decide to eat.

What was he eating before? If dry, I'd let him have it. If wet, you can try warming it up a bit to make it nice and stinky.

I would not go very long without his eating. If he really won't eat, you can try baby food (no spices - Beechnut is a good brand) or water down some wet and feed it to him with a syringe without the needle. Aim the syringe into the side of his mouth so he doesn't choke.

Re: Home from the vet but not eating

Please post and wait for advice before giving Simke any insulin tonight. If he won't eat, the insulin may drop him too low.

Re: Home from the vet but not eating

I would let him relax for a few minutes, and then try again. Do you have any all meat baby food? Are you allowed to feed him baby food?

Re: Home from the vet but not eating

Lots of options to try:

warming the food to just dead prey temp (think warm baby bottle)
Parmesan cheese sprinkled over food
Forti Flora, a probiotic, smells great to many cats
bonito flakes (dried fish) - try an Asian market if not in pet supply store
all meat baby food
tuna juice - from water packed tuna, no vegetable broth

Yahoo Feline Assisted Feeding Group for tips on syringe feeding.

Re: Home from the vet but not eating

He ate, not as much, but he did eat, his BG was over 33.3 so I gave him insulin. There is potassium mixed in his food, so maybe he doesn't like it. I tried three different foods, but he eventually started on one. He ate a can at the vet then since 1pm half an can usually he eats 2 1/2 a day. I let him wander outside and he wanted to eat grass so I think his stomach is a bit upset. ( Then thought there is glucose in the grass so stopped him)He looks better now than when I left to work three hours ago. Just gave him his antibiotic.

Re: Home from the vet but not eating

I let Mikey eat grass all the time and it's never spiked his BGs. I don't think they eat enough of it to actually increase glucose levels, so I think you're safe on that front. ;-)

It's good to hear he's eating on his own. I wouldn't worry too much if he's not eaten a lot today; just keep an eye on it. He's had a big day at the vet's and is probably not feeling very well, but he is eating and that's what's most important. :YMHUG:

Re: Home from the vet but not eating

Sometimes putting a bit in their mouth or rubbing some on their lips will get them started, then they'll start to eat off a dish. Many times mine will eat off my finger when they won't eat from their bowls.

Re: Home from the vet but not eating

I've seen several cats who weren't eating willing to eat the meat from Kentucky Fried Chicken or other fried chicken places. It seems to work much
of the time.

Paws crossed that you can keep getting some food in him.

Re: Home from the vet but not eating

Is the meat from KFC or the baked chicken they sell at the grocery stores ok for him, he does like hat

Re: Home from the vet but not eating

Yes. just give him the inner parts, not the coating on the outside of either one. It's just protein, no carbs.
That's a great treat and when they won't eat at all, sometimes you have to get creative to find something that they will accept.

A lot of people boil chicken, bake it, on their own as treats/rewards or just mid day snacks.
Mine won't eat those but she will eat raw turkey , I haven't tried cooking any of that.

Thank you had a great night
