I just want to say THANK YOU to everyone here. This site has been a LIFESAVER for sure! If not for the info on this board, I'd certainly have thrown in the towel before Tink ever made it home from the hospital. And, if not for the strong encouragement to home test, he'd have certainly gone hypo early on. We had to go from 1.5u to 2u to get his numbers under control, but then his insulin need deminished quickly to the point where he barely gets any now - all within a few weeks time. Without home testing, I'd have had no way to know how much insulin to give and would certainly have OD'd him.
He's doing SO well now I just can't believe it! Still struggling with converting to wet food, so I caved in and got some EVO dry (7%carbs) and am feeding that with the wet instead of the higher carb kibble he had before. At this point I'd rather know he's eating enough to regain muscle mass and deal with eliminating kibble later. I think if I do half low-carb kibble and half low-carb wet, then work up to more wet, I'll get him switched over eventually. But I figure at 7% carbs, the only thing it's really hurting is my wallet.
Tink even drank from the faucet this morning! He used to do this EVERY time I go in my bathroom. This was the first time he's done it since coming home from the vet, and the only time I've seen him drink anything other than "juice" from his wet food. I'm guessing he WAS drinking from his fountain too, as he's not dehydrated... but this was still a big step towards the "return to normal".
He's also been PLAYING! A LOT! He hasn't played in months, but he's 10 so I had attributed it to old age. He enjoyed the box the EVO came in almost as much as he enjoys the EVO. It's so good to see him racing around the house again (especially since I think this will help increase his appetite and rebuild some muscle!).
Now that he's off everything "high-carb", I'm hoping he can maybe go OTJ. He's only had two .25u doses of insulin in the last ten days and has stayed under 200. Last few days he's mostly in green or blue, but even the blues are typically under 150. Now that he doesn't have any high carb kibble (as of last night), I think we'll see even better numbers.
So anyway... headbutts from Tink and a great big THANK YOU from me! cat_pet_icon
