I had read somewhere a long time ago that people said "Long Live the King" when their king died because the king isn't just a person; he's the heart and soul of his nation. The king lives on in his people's hearts. We always had a running joke in the house about how Talley was the King of our lil home for the last 13 years so I could find no more fitting phrase to put on the urn I have ordered..
Tomorrow, Talley is going to leave us. His entire body is shutting down. More importantly, I think Talley's told me that it's his time to go. Don't ask me how I know; I just do... Thirteen years together has allowed me to understand more about him than I could possibly explain.
For some closure, we took Talley to a second vet to figure out what went wrong. As it turns out, this vet found a tumor that no other vet had located. He suspects (because the tumor started in his pancreas) that it was the cause of everything from his diabetes on. In a strange way, that comforts me. I can finally stop blaming myself for his diabetes - telling myself that I should have fed him better. Even if we had caught it early, the treatment for his condition would only have given us about a year and a half. Considering he's gone a year and a half without treatment, I feel lucky.
Talley's been my cat since the day he was born; I was there, holding the cutest damn kitten in the entire universe - only 8 years old myself. He's seen me through my life: Four schools, from elementary to college. I even have his name on my class ring because they told us to put "the most important thing about your four years of high school" on it. Talley. Engraved in platinum and silver with a diamond heart. I was supposed to mention my honor society, or my GPA, but Talley took the cake.
It was him I hugged when crying about my first crush. It was because of him that I started writing poetry, the strange girl in class dedicating odes to a cat. He was with me when I got my driver's ID, rubbing on it vigorously for luck. Just last year I toasted my first beer to him.
But most importantly, he was a strength. My strength. He made the whole family happier. When people would tell me that cats are uncaring, I couldn't believe it. I guess Talley had some puppy in him because he is the most loyal, loving animal I have ever known. His nickname was Treasure for a reason.
I know I'm rambling, and I guess that's natural. Before I ramble entirely, I want to thank you all. Without the help of these forums, I wouldn't be able to have had afforded Talley's care for the year and a half that I did. Thank you so much for helping me improve the quality of his life. If Talley could type, he'd thank you too.
With endless love,
