My boy Loki spent the day at the vet's yesterday because he had a visit last Tues due to the fact that he is still losing weight. Three months ago he was 17 lbs, now he is down to 10 lbs, his #'s seemed good here at home so the vet tested him there and he was 446 :o so she wanted him for a day to do a curve and an Xray, she was looking for anything abnormal, she also did check other functions such as his kidneys tru blood work, the results were nothing abnormal in xray  kidneys are perfect :-D but his blood sugar was 446 the highest and lowest at 356. She wants me to change monitor and let me borrow hers which is the Ultra light Mini One Touch. The one I was using at home was the True to Go. This morning I tested and Loki is 423 prior to eating and insulin. Loki is on ProZinc.
I am using the food chart found here and feeding him the low carbs, high protein ones that I can find in the super market. ( I hope I am feeding him right?) He will not eat the food the vet offered.
I also noticed that his fur is looking dirty and oily, he does groom himself, his personality has not changed still playful and very loving.
I guess my question is this any advise would be greatly appreciated. I think I need support dealing with the fact I have failed Loki with this whole thing. He is such a good boy and out of my other 2 cats he really is MY BOY, we are so close my husband says he should be jealous LOL.
Thanks for reading it helps to get all this out.

Can you give us some more information? What dose did you start with and what is the dose now? Specifically what brand and type of food?

We do try to stay away from any meters that have True in the name, as they have proven not to be! It would be great if you could get some numbers for us at preshot and then 6 hours after the shot so we can see what is going on.

It would be helpful for us, and the vet and you to have a spreadsheet so you can see the history of his doses and numbers. Here are the directions:http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=18207 If you need help, just ask.

Thanks Sue and Oliver for you response, his #'s yesterday at the vet were 446,423,358,324,318 then at home at 7:30 PM he was 418 this morning he was 423. The vet started him on 1/2 q day and now he is 1/2 2x's per day. He is on Prozinc.
I am feeding FF Turkey, chicken and Tuna also the yellowfin tuna fare which he loves, got those from the list here. He is also having a little amount of dry, very little such as 1 tablespoon per day.
As far as the spread sheet is concerned I am confused at the AMPS and PMPS and the + Numbers. If you could help with this I would appreciate it.
Thanks.
Ok never mind the amps and pmps just looked it up. But the #s thing has me confused.

amps = morning number before the shot am preshot
pmps = evening number before the shot pm preshot

+6 is the bg number six hours after the shot
+3 is 3 hours, etc. The second group of columns after pmps are the numbers in the night cycle.

So he started on one shot a day in the beginning? For how long? How long has he been on two shots daily? Insulin only lasts 12 hours in cats so the one shot daily may be part of the problem. Also, any bits of dry can raise the numbers. I would cut it completely out. Here is a list of low carb treats: Lo carb treats

Ok thanks got it now, wow this is complicated but worth it, he started on his 1/2 daily last April and yesterday went on his 2 times per day. Thanks for the treat list.

If you just started the 2X daily shots, that can make a huge difference in the numbers so be watching them carefully. Sorry to say that the regime since April has, most likely, not helped with his numbers at all. One shot a day, in almost every case, means that he might have a normal cycle after the shot. But then the second 12 hours he shoots up into very high numbers and has a high preshot every morning. It puts their body into a constant rebound cycle from very high numbers to some lower numbers.

Hopefully the 2 shots a day will make a difference in his numbers overall, but it can take a number of days for him to settle in.
