nailbite_smile We went away overnight and I had Loki in boarding at the vets. I called this this AM to see how things were and his BS was 290, also the vet told me he had temp of 102.6 she felt he had an infection somewhere so she looked his records over and saw he had taken Convenia in the past and done well with it so she gave him a shot of it. Needless to say I was so worried that we came home a day early to get him. The vet closed early being Sat so I called a neighbor and he picked him up for me, when I got home Loki was trilled to see me and was begging for food. I fed him but the vet never told me how to proceed so now I am not sure of what to do for him.
He is on 1/2 unit in the AM once a day and that is it, his #'s have ranged from 125 to 185. I am supposed to check his BS once per week at 8 PM . His appetite is good but I feel like I am failing him here with this and must do better. The vet who saw him is not familiar with him as the other vet is away on vacation. I was thinking of checking his BS in the AM prior to feeding and also at the 8PM and wait till she returns to have her go over this with me.
Can you guys tell me if this would be ok? Not sure if I should increase his insulin or how to do it when I get his #.
Thanks.

Are you still on ProZinc? Are you giving it once daily? Insulin lasts only 12 hours in cats, so giving once a day means he will be in better numbers for the first 12 hours and then can run high once the insulin wears off, for the next 12 hours.

If you really want to stay on top of this and have the possibility of his being regulated or going into remission, I'd suggest the following.

Get us some numbers so we can help with dosing. Get a number before the shot and several midcycle. If he is running 120-185 on .5 units, you might be able to give him mini doses. Go over the PZI forum for advice on how to do that.http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewforum.php?f=24Once we know how the insulin is working, we can help you refine the dose.

What is he eating? Is he still on Purina DM? Wet or dry?

The infection can cause his numbers to rise and the antibiotic has the possibility of making them lower, so you definitely want to get some bg levels.

Hi, thanks for the reply, to answer yes we are still using Prozinc and yes it's once per day, going to start tonight with checking him 4 X daily and get some #'s. I tried to use the spread sheet here but I do not understand it at all. Do you think that 4 times a day is ok to check him? Or is it too much? he hates it but we will get thru this somehow. He is eating FF classic and some Special Kitty mixed grill and also some Friskies pate classic Seafood , all these are on the Janet and Blinky list. He seems like his old self just looking older and sleeping more. But still playing when we play together. Thanks again

HI Michele, glad to hear Loki is home and doing okay. I'm glad your hometesting but think only once a week doesn't give you enough information. I think most folks here test twice a day before each insulin shot - not only to make sure its safe but also to give an idea of the blood glucose averages. Doing multiple tests in one day is called running a curve - you test before the am shot, feed, shoot - then at 3 or 4 hour intervals do another test until time for the pm shot (or 12 hours). This gives you an idea how your cat is responding to the insulin. So I would definitely expand your testing so that you know what insulin dose to give. Jan

Re: Loki's #'s going up have some #'s

I have been driving my boy crazy today testing him but I finally have some #, thanks so much for hanging in there with Loki and I

6AM - Before insulin he was 185 gave him 1/2 unit (his reg dose)
8AM- 155
2PM- 168 also fed him after BS check
4PM- 154 and he is eating now.
Should I check again around 8PM?
He seems back to his old self, this boy does not do well without me and while I am so worried about him I think he knows it.
No bad effect from his antibiotic shot yesterday.
He is eating well. He never was a big eater just a picker but he seems to have his appetite back and better. I am just glad I was able to test him as often as I wanted today, and he does not hate me but his ears look sore. Called the vet and waiting on a call back. Please tell me what you all think.
Thanks again. nailbite_smile

Good for you getting the numbers. It is great he is feeling better and eating better.

Those are great looking numbers. I assume you are still planning on giving the one dose a day? If so, check at night - maybe before you go to bed or late tonight. If he is climbing steadily, it will be a good indicator that the insulin is only lasting 12 hours and that he would benefit from a second dose .

Thanks Sue and Oliver, spoke to the vet and she is happy with these numbers also, she does want me to check him tonight also. He has lost 2 lbs though which worries me. She said as long as he is eating not to panic too much and wants me to bring him in at the end of the week for a re weight. He is really in a great mood, grooming himself and being playful. I think that in the 2 months this is happened this has scared me because before this he never was sick, ever. He now is at 12 lbs instead of 14. I am going to ask her about the 12 hr time span. Thanks and will update soon.
