I have talked about this before, but just went by Precious and her mouth is frozen open again. She does not sound like fluid in lungs.
What does a cat look like who has a seizure and how long does it last?
She has had this happen at least 5 other times with many months between or even years.
It is like if she has seen a ghost and mouth frozen. Eyes slighly move and she even walked away from me.
Any ideas? I even sent text to my daughter who is finishing up her vet asst. in April and did not get back to me yet.
When she comes out of this she is fine and walks and eats. Would hairball cause any of this?
Thanks you guys for any help. Have discussed with vet too, but not when it has happened.

Can you get a photo of it?

Don't think a hairball would do it. Sometimes, a cat will hang its mouth open when it is using the vomerular gland on the roof of the mouth.

Things which may help diagnosis:
How often does it occur?
How long does an episode last?
Does it seem to hurt when it is like this?
What, if anything, makes it better? Worse?
Is there anything which always comes before it? After it?
Will she let you touch her anywhere when it is occuring? On her mouth specifically when it is occuring?
Will she let you try to close her mouth? Does it seem like it is painful if you touch or manipulate it?

Re: Hi everyone need to brain think. Precious and mouth

One of my guys does something like this when he smells outdoor cat spray on the screen door...could that be it?

Re: Hi everyone need to brain think. Precious and mouth

She just meowed when I stuck finger in her mouth and walked away. This frozen state can last 1/2 hour to hour.
So far today it is half hour. I tried again to shut it and it is just locked up. She is totally inside cat and never goes out.

Re: Hi everyone need to brain think. Precious and mouth

You might want to change the title of your post as it is alittle confusing about what the topic is. Maybe say " cat has possible jaw or mouth problem?" I had a cat whose teeth were loose and his jaw got "propped" open several times. Once I had the bad fang tooth removed this resolved the problem. In any case, it may be worth bringing precoius to a vet dentist. They could also probably help you rule out any facial joint issues.

Precious and mouth, update

ok well I tried massaging her jaw and head and it has not helped.
So I put my finger in her mouth to feel around her gums.
Then I put it a ways down her throat to make sure nothing stuck there.
Well she just closed her mouth. So what does that say?
I will be seeing my vet on Tuesday with another pet and well show him pic and bring up how she
looks and what happened when I touched the back down her throat.
My daughter says she just learned about Larynx paralysis with dogs the other day. Can cats get that
too?

interesting. i have a few questions...
has this kitty lived with you whole life or was from shelter or stray? i am asking this cause wondering if it ever was HBC (hit by car) and had jaw fx'ed. often w/ stray/street cats these fx'ed jaws heal on the street and no one knows that jaw was once broken.
has this kitty ever had a dental? what is condition of the mouth/teeth?
what do the ears look like, is there discharge, possible infection?

but anyways a vet visit is never a bad idea! they can do x-rays to check out condition of the temporomandibular joint and see if that is normal or not. will look in ears. and vet can do simple neuro check in the office exam too.
and if cat has never had a dental, that is something that needs to be considered, a tooth out of alignment or even just pain *might* cause strange jaw positions.
or she is just a strange cat?
do post back ofter vet visit, i'm curious to know what is discovered.....

btw, don't worry about laryngeal paralysis, totally different symptoms. it is far more common in canines than felines and you would be hearing changes in breathing, loud stridor type.

Thanks Jojo
I will see vet today and let you know.
Precious has always been with us and a inside cat.
Her mouth is fine. Its like when she does this she has seen a ghost or is in shock with mouth open.
But she does meow, walk away and moves her eyes. It is just weird how this time I stuck finger to the back of her throat and
then she shut it. Let you know later.
Thanks
Kellie

My vet has no clue either on Precious

My vet said he has no idea. Said he would look and see if a tooth causes this or check her tm joint and see if her jaw pops.
Also says it could be neurological or spasms thing. So who knows.
Also Jojo he looked at Bailey eyes he was treating for a scratch and said her eye looks better, but conceerned that
maybe her cornea is not down and talked about how a eye vet would see what might needs to be done. Also said something
about needle in the eye to make it stay down. Also said her other eye has hyper-pigmentation. Oh yea Bailey is a Peke puppy.
What does all this mean?
Thanks
Kellie
