Im using the pet test meter and twice it read “lo” in the last few weeks. I tested myself with it after and my read seemed normal. I fed him and i will retest. He was diagnosed a week ago. Complete diet change.
Im wondering why he drops so low. If the meter is accurate i can see why testing before is always needed.
When drawing lantus from a pen, do you poke straight into the rubber stopper to draw? Or unplug the stopper? Which way would be best?
Im trying to preserve the meds and I thought removing stopper (if possible) opposed to poking through would help?
One doc suggested one unit 2x a day. Another 1 unit 1x a day. Meanwhile i want to start slow with half a unit twice a day as needed.
Does anyone shoot lantus 2x a day? I thought it was a 1x per day med. anyone doing half units?

im learning so much and appreciate it

You need to keep testing evert 15 minutes until you're above 50.
Apply some honey to the gums, or lips.

Claudia, I'm glad you are testing at home. If you aren't giving any insulin yet, then it would appear that your diet change alone has given a good result, it may be that he doesn't need insulin. Can you tell us how he was diagnosed? Was he showing signs of peeking and drinking more, and what tests did they run at the vet's to diagnose diabetes? Did that include fructosamine and urinalysis?

Since you are using AT2 meter, check to make sure you have the right code for the test strips entered into the meter. Also, you should have some test solution, I would use that and see whether the test strip reads the test solution in the right range just to make sure it is functioning properly. Sometimes the AT2 will give a reading but without enough blood drop, the reading can be inaccurate (and on the lower end).

If you continue to get readings under 150 on the pet meter, I wouldn't be giving any insulin.

There is no immediate concern with regard to lower readings if you haven't given any insulin, so honey/syrup isn't necessary.

ETA: I went back and checked some previous posts, I just saw the word pet in your signature, assumed AT2 meter. Time for stronger prescription glasses .

ETA#2: it would really be good if you could get a SS set up, I believe that was suggested in a previous post. The trouble is, without seeing where these lower numbers are in the cycle and what other tests there are, it is hard to assess.
