LL Oldie Karre the Emperor - 3 Years OTJ (Long, with Photos)

Greetings, Lantus Landers!

Three years ago, His Majesty Karre the Emperor of Basically Everything, after a nearly fatal DKA-episode followed by five tumultuous weeks of tightly regulated insulin treatment – made possible by the fabulous LL-team of advisors – developed a penchant for chewing gum and boldly embarked upon his OTJ-Trial. A fortnight later – on Thanksgiving, appropriately enough – he was officially off the juice. Now he has reached his three-year milestone, and is practically beaming with pride (apart from, of course, his breathtaking beauty and overall royal fabulousness). His first BG test in almost a year: A perfectly, beautifully green 4.1/73.8 - Hooray!

Jack, Karre, Maggie, Luca (our newest addition, a now 6-month-old tomkitten) and I would like to dedicate this very special anniversary condo both to all those of you who are with us at the Fantastic Falls as well as all those of you still doing the sugar-dance with and for your beloved feline friends. We hope that those among you still grappling with the many ups and downs that this disease throws at you and your cats can take heart and have hope – with the help of this incredible community, you won’t be alone any step of the way, and maybe you’ll even dance your way all the way to the Falls – you’re invited anytime for tunaritas and catnipinis on us!

We are well, in a roundabout sort of way. Hout Bay keeps slipping slowly into summer. We keep slipping slowly into the pool. Some of you know that our darling Pepita went missing a few months ago. She has not (yet) returned to us. Always our little African Wild Cat, we try to take comfort in the fact that she is an avid hunter and a bold, brave soul, who is hopefully making a good life for herself, wherever she is. We miss her and think and talk about her every day.

Also, some of you may not yet know we have a new family member: Luca, a beautiful tomkitten who was thrown out like garbage together with his sister and was luckily rescued by our local animal shelter. We had actually made up our minds to adopt them both – alas, it wasn’t meant to be: when we arrived the next morning (after having decided the previous night, having met them the previous afternoon and fallen for them utterly), his sister had *just* been adopted by an elderly lady whose 20-year-old cat had passed away… So Luca came to us all by himself. When we took him home, he was white with black spots – by now, his black spots are showing more and more orange and chocolate brown! (His sister was a gorgeous little calico too.) He’s also got a fabulous spot shaped like Africa on one side. Quite the exceptional little fellow. He fell in love with our beautiful Queen Magpie (Maggie) straight away. Karre, the Emperor, ignored him at first, but they are slowly making friends.

Yesterday evening, the cats and Jack and I had a little celebration – to honour our wonderful Emperor Karre, and to mark Jack’s and my very first wedding anniversary. As some of you know, we got married one year ago today. I must be off and get on with the breakfast preparations, but I shall be thinking many sunshiney thoughts of you all and sending you some pale blue breezes that are, as I sit here and write to you, whispering the promise of summer to the trees.

Much love from Cape Town,
Jane, Jack, Karre, Maggie, Pepita (in absentia), and Luca.

P.S. Some pictures, as I know some of our old friends here are wont to demand them :-)

Congratulations to Karre on 3 years OTJ! That really is something to celebrate! Happy Anniversary to you and Jack also!

Sending vines that your sweet Pepita is safe and and I hope he returns to you.

Hope you all enjoy your summer. We are slowly slipping into winter.

Congratulations on three years at the Falls, Your Majesty. May your residency there be permanent. party_cat

Barry celebrated two years October 23. It's so amazing. Now we're working on getting our newest family member, Paisley, to the Falls. She's a stubborn young lady but I've the most experience when it comes to being stubborn.

Happy Anniversary to the beans of the house. The photo is lovely.

Hope you enjoy your summer. Winter, although not official, has definitely arrived. I had to use 4 wheel drive to get to town last evening as the roads were so nasty.

Luca is a handsome young man. In Michigan (US), we use our hands as maps. I guess you can use Luca in the same way.

What a joyful condo! Best wishes to you and Jack for more happy years together and for opening your home and hearts to what is clearly a very special group of kitties. I hope Karre deigns to share in his celebration with Maggie and Luca and the absent Pepita. And thank you for sharing both of your celebrations with us.

Hi Jane! Hi Jack! Happy Paper Anniversary!

How wonderful to have a Karre condo in Lantus Land again! I am so thrilled that The Emperor of Basically Everything is still doing well. His coat looks so lovely and and sleek in his photo. And what a well rested bunch of kitties you have there! They must all be dreaming fabulous summery dreams in their African sunbeams.

I wish that Pepita could have been there to celebrate the occasion. I pray that she is out there living her African Wild Cat life, and that one day she will come home for a visit to show you how well she has been doing. I know that Bear Man is walking softly behind her and keeping her safe.

How is it possible that three years have passed so quickly since Karre moved to the Falls? Much has happened in those years, in your lives as well as in mine, and not all of it is worthy of celebration, but it is all worthy of remembering, commemorating, and keeping the special parts tucked away in our hearts.

Here is to celebrations and to friends - those who are with us, and those who are tucked away in our hearts.

A hearty Congratulations to you and Jack for your anniversary, and to beautiful Karre for HIS very special anniversary, too. So sad that Pepita hasn't turned up. I admire your attitude. Thanks for sharing these special occasions with us all and have a blessed summer as we slip into short days and chilling weather here. (I like the thought that there are flowers blooming where you are and will think of that when shoveling snow and scraping the ice from my windshield!)

Congratulations again!

Re: LL Oldie Karre the Emperor - 3 Years OTJ (Long, with Pho

Many thanks to all of you for visiting Karre's condo! We, too, wonder how three years could already have passed since the days we were glued to the FDMB screen fretting ceaselessly! Especially in light of the many crises that have been and are still happening here and elsewhere, we feel very grateful indeed to have been given those years with our special emperor, and each other. I'm put in mind of Jill's closing wish in her recent Thank-You-Condo: that we all hold our loved ones close, furry or not, family or friend, and not take for granted that we are given time to know and love them. We second that, with all our hearts.

Much love,
Jane
