Just wondering if anyone is using The Litter Genie or anything similar.
We have just adopted our 4th kitten in the past 3 months.
Would it be way too costly for the bags having to scoop for 4 cats?
And does it really hide the odor.

The cat room is also my computer room and I want to keep the litter system right in that room.
But I don't want to waste the $$ if the odor will linger.

Honestly I've always had multiple cats & I've had several of these over the years. They're a waste of money IMO. You have to change them so often b/c they don't hold much. And the ones that twist or roll the bag as it goes is a nightmare! I personally got a 5gallon bucket with the lid & I just put small trash bags in it with a sticky air freshener in the bottom. Works great. Also any moisture in the air aids in smell as well so I have a moisture absorber deal in the litter room to. Between the 2 no one would ever even know we had cats! HTH

I also have a 5 gallon container that has an airtight lid, kind of the kind used to store and keep pet food fresh. I either use old store plastic bags or 5 gallon trash bags in it which I buy in bulk at Sams or Costco. Being airtight it can be full to the top and I don't smell a thing. I've seen them at Container Stores, Wal Mart, pet shops, Home Depot, Lowes... Pretty cheap too.

I use reuse plastic liter containers.I added wood to the lid to weigh it down and seal it without having to really press down. I also added a handle.

I have two litter genies because they're so awesome. I only have two cats so I don't have much to scoop but these things are great for maintaining the litter boxes throughout the week and even extend the life of the litter. Not sure how much they cost now, but I got them at Target on sale for ~$8 each and the refill cartridges for around $4 for two of them. The refills last me at least a couple of months. Last time I checked prices at PetCo and PetSmart, there was a HUGE difference in price compared to Target (waaaay more expensive than Target).

And the cool thing about them that my brother told me is that the lining/bags are used by outdoors people for safe disposal of their waste. Emergency preparedness. ;-)

Vets recommend a litterbox per cat, plus an extra. Only 1 for 4 cats will need scooping 2 or more times a day when they are adults. If they squabble, 1 cat may prevent another from getting to the litterbox.

Sizewise, you want the length of the box about equal to the longest cat's measurement from chest to tail base. I use cement mixing trays as they'll fit the largest cat I have.

I have plenty of litter boxes. And we scoop about 3x a day.
I was just wondering how the disposal systems work....if I'd be buying the inserts like crazy.
If it was worth it to keep out the odor instead of throwing the litter in my kitchen
garbage....really, if they actually work!

We have 6 cats and have the old litter lockers and the new litter genie. I have one on each floor of my house since we have about 10 litter boxes. I like the conveniece. Yes, the refills are a pain, but my boxes are in the main livng areas of my house so I need convenience and odor control. I've found the cheapest refills through Amazon or drugstore.com.

If you wait for sales, the cost is worth it. I buy them in bulk whenever the price drops and then don't need to buy again until their next sale.

I used the litter locker for years. I found it a pain in the butt. The last few years I have been using a diaper pail I bought at amazon.

I love these, they amazingly keep the smell in, takes standard medium garbage bags or the plastic bags your groceries are bagged in at the store. Has a foot pedal and an area in the lid if you want to put a deodorizer ( I never did). Much better. They don't look too bad sitting there, I actually put a nice kitty sticker on mine to dress them up.

Which do you prefer...which is better?? More cost effective?
Do you use the litter genie plus with the longer bags?

Also check Craigslist. I believe these are the same thing as a diaper genie.

We just double bag the litter in grocery bags and twist the top after partially filling. Untwist to continue filling.

Once about half full, tie the inner bag, pick it up a bit and reposition the outer bag so it isn't tying over the hole of the inner bag, then dispose.

Seems to keep the odor down and dispose of neatly, barring any kitty having digestive upsets.

We're not allowed to have grocery bags in most of California any more.  Most places, even if it's not (yet) outlawed by the city are BYOB (Bring Your Own Bag) and I don't shop at 7-Eleven enough to get bags.

Wow!! I find that amazing. I can't imagine not having plastic bags around.

I use an empty Tidy Cat pail with a plastic grocery bag in it. I sprinkle a little baking soda in the bag after scooping and then put the lid back on. I dispose of it once a week (I only have 2 cats).

The Big Island and Maui have outlawed them too, soon the island of Oahu will as well. I think it's a great idea, those bags find themselves all over the place, on the beaches, stuck on trees, in the ocean, it's a mess. Reusable bags is the way to go. Anyway, I still like my 5 gallon airtight container (pet food container) with 5 gallon bags. It takes about a week to fill with two cats and there's no odor because it's airtight.

For ease of use I like the Litter Genie or Litter Locker 2. I will say the thing I hate about the litter genie is you have to touch the opening to pop off the lid to replace the refill. Your cat waste touches it, so I'm always grossed out & use a tissue then scrub my hands. The litter locker 2 uses the same refills as a diaper genie--but I think the DG ones must be slightly smaller since they tend to tip a bit.

We stock up too when there is a sale. I buy 6 at a time normally, especially when drugstore.com does $10 off $40 with free S&H. The refills for the original litter locker are cheaper, but with the turning of the wheel I don't think you can cram as much poop in them. We emtpy ours each week and a refill probably lasts less than a month, even less if we have fosters.
