litter box urine odor

Hi everybody,

I'm up to 3 units of insulin twice a day. Monday, we bring Huck in for some tests-to the vet.

I'm having trouble dealing with the terrible odor of Huck's litter box from his urine. Does anyone know how to deal with this-which hits you as soon as you open the door to our house.

How often do you change the litter and clean the entire box? and what kind of litter? You might want a new kind? (but transition it gradually). Also a second box is always a good idea.

Until you get the diabetes regulated, there will be lakes of wet litter.

You need the litter to be 3-4 inches deep so that deposits can be covered.

You may find a bigger litterbox will help. I get cement mixing trays from Home Depo that are perfect - they're deep enough, long enough and wide enough for big cats.

Of course, unless you scoop or empty daily, the odor may build up considerably.

Are you sure the odor is coming exclusively from the litter box? My Molly had many accidents until I got her BG down to happy levels. She had to go so badly she couldn't make it to the litter box. Her favorite emergency spot was thankfully the middle of the bathroom floor which was easy to clean.....but, perhaps put the box in a closed room (with kitty) and step out of your home for 15 mins or so, and re-enter with a fresh nose....do you still smell it strongly?
If so, see if the odor is coming from other areas of your home where kitty may have had accidents.
If there's any spots, the cleaner called Nature's Miracle is wonderful stuff (available in most pet stores). Cat urine has a ferocious odor and this stuff gets rid of it quickly. Also a light dusting of febreeze works as a temporary fix until the Nature's Miracle gets to work (takes a day or two to be most effective)
