Litter box behavior - can I rule out a blockage?

Hi everyone,

I'm concerned about Moritz's litter box behavior -- yesterday I saw him just standing in the litter box. I'm not sure if he had just gone or not (I didn't see him get in). The other day it was a bit unusual, too -- I can't remember exactly now -- but I think he went in the litter box/(almost went in?) and then got out. I placed him back inside, and he urinated (if I remember correctly). There has been urine in the box (or near the box -- he sometimes gets in but his bum hangs over a bit so he misses) consistently, and he had a urinalysis last week when he got his blood test (they had to do it by free catch method since he urinated as they were examining him).

He urinated yesterday evening and during the night (just saw the urine -- didn't actually see him go), and I also saw him urinate earlier today. Do anyone know, as long as there's urine in the box (I'll keep checking) can I rule out a blockage? I know these are serious and so would want to get him treated for that if there is one/chance of one. Or might a partial blockage be possible?

His CRF is pretty bad -- can this cause strange litter box behavior?

My normal vet isn't in because they lost electricity due to the storm on the east coast and haven't gotten it back. I called and left a message with my previous vet.

Thank you so much,
Elena

I am guessing that he is your only cat? I would think if he is your only cat and there is urine from over night, that he is okay, but I would feel real relieved when you hear him or see him having a good pee.

Sometimes, my cat will get in the box and get out, and I think he's actually constipated, but I don't know if that is the same case with your cat.
I have also made appointments to my regular vet and gone, and I have taken my cat to the ER before (on a few occasions) when I wasn't sure, just for peace of mind. It's worth a lot.

Pee, nice and strong and long Moritz.

CRF cause frequent urination.
Did the urine analysis performed last week show anything abnormal?
Does the urine look normal? Any red tinge like blood or anything in the urine?
As long as he is urinating he is not blocked. What is bad is frequent trips to the LB with no or just drops of urine. Sometimes it will look he is urinating in an inappropriate place and but one leave drops or no urine.

If you see urin in the box and he is the only cat you have there is no blockage. My Greylie has had a few and I always saw him go in the box try and come out again... I smoothed out the litter and watched for footprints.. there were lots but no urin. I then took him to the vet. I never waited it will not go away by itself.

I dont know if this will help or just confuse you more. Maybe someone will have an answer for both of us. My newly diabeti cat (1 month) will only go in the conrner of his litter box. He often hangs his rear off the edge so he misses the box completely. This was one of the behaviors that helped me realize something was wrong. He did have a UTI but it has been taken care of and he is still doing it. Anyone??
