Lily Acro Kitty No Insulin since Jan 27

Hello everyone! Its been awhile since I've posted. Not sure what is happening but Lily hasn't needed insulin since Jan 27. She went to the vet for a checkup and blood work a few weeks ago. Everything was normal except her BUN & GGT levels were elevated. Her BUN was 41 (IDEXX normal levels 16-36) and her GGT was 11 (IDEXX normal levels 0-4). She is still on a raw diet (EZ Complete). I did start this week giving her milk thistle to see if that would help her GGT #s. Other than that, she is hanging in there!

Lily has lost a couple of pounds which has me worried. She is getting around fine and has a good appetite again. For those high GGT levels I convinced my vet to prescribe the antibiotic Clavamox and anti-imflamatory Onsior, thinking it might be cholangitis. She was having some of the symptoms,-weight loss, vomiting. Since finishing the antibiotic she hasn't vomited at all and her appetite has returned.

On Santa Barbara?

I’d heard they were very good, but that’s a bit of a drive for me. We’re near Vanderbilt/Bonita Beach....
I used to live in Bonita Springs and would drive to Naples to see that vet. I also know of someone who lives on Fort Myers Beach that would drive to Naples to see her. Thats when I figured she had to be a good vet if someone would drive that far just for her. Thats when I began to go there.

Does your vet have any suggestions of what to do with the GGT? Has the number been out for more than one test? My vet didn't worry about one-off's and always suggested a follow up test a while later if something was off. Often it corrected.

Do you know if any of Lily's organs are larger than normal due to the acro. Larger livers are not uncommon - though Neko's liver was larger later on but had no liver values out of range.

I'm hoping the vet has prescribed the Onsior for only a limited time. It's not supposed to be used for more than 3 days.

This is a link to an article on liver issues in cats. They mention using using products such as SAMe and other antioxidants. (I apologize -- the post is a bit dated.)

@Wendy&Neko & @Sienne and Gabby (GA), see my post above. Clavamox for 5 days and Onsior for 3 days. She isn't vomiting anymore & her appetite has returned. This is the first blood test where the GGT was elevated. And it was quite higher than the normal value. The values are in an earlier post. I am giving milk thistle and AquaE. Not sure if Lily's liver is enlarged. I probably should have an ultrasound done...

My vet was able to tell my feel of the liver, without the ultrasound. Which makes it easier of course. An ultrasound of the liver might tell you if there is any issue there.

@Stressedcatmom , hello. Sorry to hear about your kitty being diagnosed with acro. Lily did not have any kind of surgery or radiation to treat the acro. Only large doses of insulin to control her sugar. At one time Lily was getting 55 units of lantus twice a day, that was a couple of years ago. I guess the tumor just turned itself off and stopped pulsing. I do feed her a raw diet and she does get "golden paste" as well.
Speaking of which, what do I do with the two vials of lantus that I just purchased recently right before she went off the juice?

I think you can head over to the supply closet and post that you have some available. I’m sure someone will take it off your hands.

So you just feed raw defrosted chicken or beef? What is golden paste?

Wow. 55u!

Yes 55 units! Mark's Marine Pharmacy knows me well! LOL
I feed a raw diet using EZ Complete. I have other kitties besides Lily and they all eat chicken thighs & pork mostly. You can find out about EZ Complete on the FoodFurLife website.
Golden paste is made with turmeric powder.
