I hope you readers know the Tom and his latest updates.
I had noticed by his unwashably blackened white fur and his blackend mouth area that Tom had been visiting the fireplace area. I thought the blackened area around his mouth was due to sniffing around.
I just caught him in there furioulsy licking the fake wood in the gas fireplace.
I pulled him out and his tongue was black.
Why? Why would he do this?\
Do we need to get some help.
I need to google how poisonous it is.
Help.

Is that fake wood made of plastic?
just a thought, I know that a lot of kitties, Shakes included, love to eat plastic...
what it means I dont know....

ok, i just googled it. it is a something an animal might do to help an upset tummy. i put the gate thing up. i will give him a pepcid and well, at least he did'nt eat any.
wow.
that was strange.

Tom who has been out from under the bed for 5 or 6 days now took the horrors ( ;-) ) of taking 1/4 of a pepcid a/c to mean it's time to go hide under the bed again.....oye vey! He may have thought it was more bupe and that was a drug that made him want to hide alot. Anticipatory hiding.

Out from under the bed for 5-6 days... good boy. Hope the Pepcid makes his tummy feel better. I guess I can see why animals would go after charcoal or charred stuff for nausea... soaks up the icky stuff in your tummy.

Tom's new mssion in life - "I will run and jump and act happy and while I am at it, I will attempt to drive momma insane by doing off the wall stuff like licking fake firewood!" What the meow, TomTom?
Is he showing any other "my belly hurts" symptoms like licking his "lips" or dry heaving?
Had a similar incident last night with Bob. I'm working and get a call from DW saying I had to come home and rescue a skink from Bob the hunter. Of course, my reply is "Just pick the lizard up and put it outside?", but no, "I'm not picking it up!" was the answer to that (This from a lady who has done wildlife rehab for decades). So I run home (5 minute ride) and find Bob with a wounded skink trapped underneath the feet of an excerise bike, just daring it to make a run for safety. I move Bob out of the way, pick up this poor almost dead skink, and put him out back where he most likely ended up as food for some wild beast like a possum later. I patted Bob on his unsweet little head and gave him a couple dried salmon treats for being such a brave little hunter and keeping the house safe from intruders. He quickly got over the fact that I had removed his "kill". Skinks aren't good for kitties. Some of them can even be deadly if consumed. This wasn't one of those, but I wasn't going to let him eat it anyway.
The bright side? Bob was "hunting", which is an encouraging sign given my concern lately for his inactivity level.

Lori, keep us posted on Tom's tummy situation and if the pepcid works.

He's sulking because you removed a new fun thing from his list of things to do this afternoon. And because you had the audacity to make him take a pill.

Hi Lori,

Did you say if the fake wood is made of plastic or not? Most plastics, even bags, etc. have petroleum products in them and some have even used fish oil to make the products. My Ketchie, who is also not doing the greatest, has always loved to lick plastic bags, and when my husband was alive and smoked, she loved to lick his cigarette ashes in the ash tray. So, I was constantly throwing them out, to keep her from doing so. Then she loved to lick Bill's fingers where he held the cigarette in between them. Sheesh!

Now, in the winter, when I bring in the kerosene heater, she loves to lick the places where I might have spilled a drop (and wiped it up) of the kerosene. She is really weird. But, she has made it to 16.

These habits are usually PICA type habits in cats and dogs and even in humans. Eating things that are not edible. Or just chewing on things that are not food.

Tom and Ketchie, both, seem to have been on death's door for quite a while now, yet, they seem that they are still hanging in there. Do they get a charge out of worrying us to death????

Take care!

Jean,
I don't think the logs are ;made of plastic. I think plastic would melt as that fireplace burns all winter. I don't know whaT it's made of but Tom was interested in the charcoal.
If you google it you'll see charcoal is used to absorb...even in humans...stuff in the tummy.
I don't know...I'm gonna keep him on pepcid or anti nausea meds for awhile....I think :?
Lori

Glad you got a laugh Julie...Carl is funny, so is Tom....I just keep them company.
Lori

From my google search PICA (who knew what that meant!) is a disorder only when it goes on 'persistently' as in the first letter P of PICA.
This was an isolated case...and charcoal is likely a tummy ache reliever...and that seems in keeping with his lack of appetite.
Do people just really know what PICA is without a google search?

lori...you can crush his Pepcid dose and mix into food.

Normally, you give 1/2 hour before a meal. But if giving on a regular
basis, you can just add to his food 2x /day....this builds up a therapeutic dose in
the body.

But I know what issues you have with him eating. May not work for you.

Pilling is no fun either.

Just because it may indicate anaemia, could you take a peek at his gums and see if they look pale? It was Astrophe's pica that alerted me to her anaemia, and it is why we were able to start her treatment so quickly-- and is why she is still with us, 2.5 years later!
