Levemir pens to give away

Hello everyone!

Right now I have 4 extra Levemir pens that I bought very recently, but the expiration date of the pens is August 2014. Since my cat is having very small doses of insulin, I'm definitely not going to use more than the one I'm using until August. I wouldn't mind giving the pens to someone who needs them, but I'm living in Denmark, Europe. Is there anyone in this forum who would like to get them? Levemir pens for free ;-). I also thought of taking them to the vet clinic, but I'd prefer to given them to someone who actually needs them.

How nice of you! I wish I could use them, but Hannah's not on Levemir. (sigh ;-) ) Just a side caution, though, if you plan to ship them out of Denmark...I ship a lot of items internationally from the US and a lot of countries have import/export laws regarding the shipment of medicine. You may want to check the laws of both your country and the destination country. You wouldn't want to break any laws and get fined for your generosity! :o

Shipping the insulin to the US may be very difficult. Yesterday, I also contacted Diabetic Cats in Need and they said they can't get insulin cross-border and through customs without an international pharmacy license. I'm trying to see if someone in this forum from Denmark or from a closer European country would like to keep them, but so far nobody showed interest. Denmark is a very small country and I doubt if there are here shelters with diabetic cats. I do not speak Danish (as I'm living here temporarily), so it makes more difficult for me to look over the internet for shelters with diabetic cats in need in the country. If nobody wants/can take the pens, I'll take the extra to the vet clinic.

You might want to keep at least one of the extra pens. Though they have an expiration date, they may very well still be good when you need another pen if you store them in the refrigerator.

For human use, they instructions say: "Once in use, the Levemir® FlexPen® shouldn’t be refrigerated, and it can be used for up to 42 days (when kept at room temperature, below 86ºF)." Since most of us keep our insulin refrigerated, it lasts much longer. You will know if your insulin is bad when your test numbers start going up.

As to giving away the other pens, it might be easier to ask at your vet's office if they any other diabetic cats are being treated. If you get connected with another diabetic cat owner, you can offer the extra pens and maybe get together on the next purchase.
 
Thanks for the tip, Debby! That's what I have in mind right now. I'm going to contact the vet and ask for other diabetic cat owners.
