Hi everyone, I have been using our bottle of levemir the vet gave us since june, I tried to use it as long as I could, but today I think it may have stopped working. Perkins has been sitting in the same spot since 5pm it's now 11:30, the last time he did this was when he wasn't on insulin and his sugar was high. So tonight I will have to start using the one levemir flex pen I managed to get. I watched the video on here but is there anything else I should do to operate the pen besides just sticking in the syringe and treating it like a vial? I'm not using the little needles just the syringe and needle you use with the vial.

Elena, there is nothing else you need to do. The only difference is that the vial in the pen works differently so you do NOT have to inject air into the pen vial prior to drawing up the dose. Are you testing Perkins BG? I don't see any numbers on the spreadsheet. Without testing, there is no way to know if the insulin in your current vial is working or not. There could be many other reasons why Perkins is acting this way. Have you checked him for ketones recently?

Nope, that is pretty much it. Stick the needle into the little rubber stopper at the end of the pen and draw out the insulin.

The only possible difference is that you don't inject any air into the pen after you insert the needle (which you may or may not have been doing with the vial).

Have you kept your bio refrigerated the whole time since June? If so, it would seem like it should still be good.

Hope that helps!
Sandi.

Hi, thanks for letting me know about the air. I haven't been able to check his sugar lately, I will try tonight , but it is very hard, he really will not tolerate it unless he is eating a lot of food and even then it's hard. Maybe we need to get a meter that needs a smaller amount of blood like the relion from walmart. I will be ordering one on the 30th of this month that is when we will be able to afford one, but for tonight I will try to get some blood.

Thanks, yes we have kept it refrigerated but since perkins is acting strange I thought it might not be working anymore.

Elena, are you in the U.S.? I have an extra meter kit that is the equivalent of the ReliOn Confirm that a lot of us use. The ReliOn is actually made by Arkray, but then WalMart puts their name on it. I got it free with the purchase of strips. I would be happy to mail it to you (at my expense) if you are in the states.

For more strips for it you could absolutely buy the Walmart ReliOn strips, or the Arkray Glucocard strips from American Diabetes Warehouse - they are EXACTLY the same, I promise.

I've had it in the cabinet for a while and I've been meaning to pay it forward. It also has 10 lancets, 10 strips, control solution, etc as shown here:

It has never been opened.

If you'd like it, let me know here, but then give me your address by direct msg.

And yes, switching to the new pen since you already have one seems like a good thing to at least try, and hopefully you can start to get some tests so you know for sure. If you are having a specific problem with testing, just let us know what it is and we might be able to help.

Best,
Sandi.

Thank you so much, that is so nice of you, but my mom already used her credit card to order the one from walmart, we had a little left on it. That was very sweet of you, God bless you for your kindness.

You are quite welcome, the most important part is that Perkins gets what he needs.

I'll be sure to pass it along to someone else in need.

Best wishes to you both!
Sandi.
