Does anyone have a good website referral for Leukemia cats? I've got a little foster Hope, that seems to be having some changes lately. We'll be heading to the vet in the next day or two, but I need to learn more first.

Thanks,
Lu-Ann

I hope someone knows of any sites, Lu-Ann.

Why do you think little Hope have leukemia, has she been diagnosed with that? In that case what tests for the diagnos was done?

She was diagnosed while in foster care, after I took her to a Vet Opthamologist for treatment for an eye ulcer. Otherwise, they were planning to remove her eye. It was saved, is healed, looks great (maybe a little cross-eyed), but she looks great! Because the eye was the most pressing issue, that was addressed before they did the FIV/LEUK test & vaccines. The results I saw had an "X" in the box next to Leukemia. No details of what type or anything else. They were going to destroy her, so instead she came home with me! My goal is to find her a home where she can be the center of someone's universe - and the only cat. She does well w/ my dogs, but then again, so do most cats. She is SOOOOO loving, and is a little purr monster. She's curled up in the bed next to my computer right now, and would be on my shoulder if I'd let her!

Not sure if it's type A, B or C. The closest from the info I've found so far, might suggest that the eye issues are part of the Lymphiod (bone marrow) type of Leukemia - but that's more jaundice visible through the eyes. And I don't think that's it. I think it's just an eye ulcer that some cats get. Not sure if she's was a stray or where she came from - no telling what caused it. Thus the reason I'm looking for more info. She was teeny tiny when she first came, maybe about 3.5 -4 pounds. She is young. She's never had the eating issues, she LOVES her some Fancy Feast! She's to 5.4 pounds last check (1/3 the average weight of my household!) - TINY!!! She's gone into heat, so will go to get spayed soon... everyone else is fixed, so I wasn't having to be rushed. When she goes in, I"ll have MY vet test her and get some detailed results. Likewise, my "First FIve" that I rescued as babies, tested positive for FIV when they were little. Turned out it was a false negative - heck, they could barely find a vein, let alone enough blood to run the test! So MAYBE... Hope's was a false positive (fingers crossed!).

No outward signs or symptoms, although eye issues can potentially be symptomatic of Leukemia. But she is a little LOVE and is amazing with kids and little children - and adults! She's always got a home here if nothing else pans out for her.

Thanks for asking.

Ironically, when Grayson was first diagnosed w/ diabetes, my mom asked if there wasn't somewhere I could send him where they'd take care of him? I told her, that would be MY house!!! Current count: 1 diabetic, 1 Leuk, 2 FIV, 1 perpetual UTI, and a house full of healthy ones!

The vet will call me back next week and tell me more about Gustav's type/types of cancer, since last year 2011 Gustav was diagnosed with lymphoma plasma cell myeloma (bone marrow), and now when he died yesterday he also had lymphoma cells cancer mass that had grown between his liver and kidney.
Here is info about the cancers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lymphoma

If little Hope have anything of what Gustav had, he too had it early, as little, showing in his white blood cell lymphocytes count, it was always too low. He was born spring 1995 and around 6 months when I got him in December 1995. Besides the low white blood cell count, he was fine but developed a hard nod on a lymph node under his front arm but nothing that showed any symptoms or bothered him, and he was then all fine until 2007, when he got a nasty sub skin infection in the butt area, that was hard to get rid of, just kept coming back. Eventually he fought it and it went away. Then in 2008 he got high plasma proteins, which with a protein eflores test showed it was high in immunoglobins, so basically he could be diagnosed with the lymphoma plasma cell myeloma then in 2008, but that vet was a sloppy vet which never got back to me so Gustav received no treatment. Last year 2011, he must have reached stage 2 in the cancer development because he also got low plasma albumin, which remained this year at the blood test in February 21st 2012. The last and other symptoms he also got was blood in urine, a very rapid weight loss and renal dysfunction in that last month between February 21st until he died yesterday March 21st.

Hope little Hope is lucky that she is fine or if she isn't that she will be so lucky and live as long with it without any major problems as Gustav did, 17 years.

Holly - Thanks! I did a quick glance at the site and it looked like they have a wealth of info to check out. That's clearly the type of site I was looking for without much success. I thought I'd bookmarked a vet med site, but went through my favorites and didn't find it. They had great info when I was first dealing w/ my FIV boys and Murphy's cancer and Kirby's glaucoma. I look forward to learning more about this condition. I'm also planning to take her in to MY vet to have her re-tested, with specific details if, in fact, she does show up positive. In the meantime, I'm going to take her back to the Eye Vet, as she's having some more problems w/ the other eye today, and I want to make sure we stay on top of it.

Ann - WOW!!! I guess I didn't realize that Gustav was leukemia +. And he lived to be 17 - that's AMAZING!!! Clearly with the different kinds of leukemias, it can be different for each, but everything I read was months to 2 years. That makes me hopeful!

She's such a dear little kitty. Just wants to be loved and held. I truly hope she can have the fabulous long life like Gustav had with you! How is Simba getting along? I know after I had Ronnie PTS many years ago, Elsie and the dogs walked around looking for him in all his favorite places. So hard on them as well as us! Keeping you both in my thoughts & prayers.

if you still need info on FELV+, PM me. Unfortunately I've had cause to learn about FELV testing and medications such as LTCI and interferon.
