Hello! Like many of you no doubt, I have a finicky kitty. It's imperative we get her appetite up and caloric intake increased (good calories of course). Has anyone had recent success to share? I see the liver shake recipe and just wanted to get other ideas (broths, etc.) that folks have used, esp for combo kitty with diabetes and CRF.

Thanks,
KitCat

I have two things that usually work.....freeze dried chicken liver treats (from Foster & Smith) I just crumble on top of their food and a little sprinkle of Fortiflora works great.

Hi KitCat,

I'm not sure if these ideas are CRF friendly; but, I did have experience with probably in the top five of all-time finicky eaters, maybe even top three or four -- who, by the way, had special dispensation regarding a certain kind of no-no food from Dr. Lisa (for which and whom we were always grateful...)... And, no, it's not recent, yet it's permanently embedded in my memory bank and heart...

Parmesan cheese sprinkled over something more appropriate (thank you, Anne and French Fry, forever in our hearts). Apparently it adds an enticing stinky, bringing-them-to-the-bowl scent/flavor (which I can't verify because have no sense of smell, but, often worked for Giz!)...

Grilled chicken, steak (trust me, round steak will do), or pork chop. All high protein, low carb...

Cheese. Giz had a thing for extra sharp cheddar... Okay, and provolone... Swiss in a pinch...

I'm not even going to tell you the other stuff... Suffice it to say, that, one night I actually put out 11 plates, bowls, and saucers full of all kinds of food. Giz finally decided she liked the 11th menu item...

You're right, it's imperative your cat eats. You can go for the healthiest of diets; but, if she won't eat it, then just give her what she likes and will eat. You can work the insulin around it. Again, I'm not sure about the CRF factor...

I feel for you, dear KitCat, I really do. I fried more than one George Foreman grill on Gizzie's behalf... And, am amazed to this day, I don't have bald spots from pulling my hair out...

Love and countless hopeful hungry hugs for you and your furry girl,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, forever whispering in my heart, and undoubtedly driving The Bridge's chef nuts...

Thank you all for your thoughts....esp to D&N for that added note re: so many bowls. It appears a bit ridiculous to the outsider but if it takes many samples, so be it. At least I'll know I tried! :-) Purrs to all!

You'll do fine, dear KitCat,

Where there's a will, there's a way. Where there's love, there's always a way! And, you obviously love your furry girl.

Please keep us posted on how you're both doing, okay? And, we'll keep those good hungry thoughts going...

Love and continued hopeful hungry hugs,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, forever whispering in my heart...

PS: Just remember, no onions, or anything prepared with onions. Onions can cause a type of anemia in cats that isn't good...

Thanks for the input, folks. I took her to a clinic today to get another look. In about 4 hours, we'll know if they have identified anything more than what we know. Sometimes it's easier to know the root cause of issues so I'm hopeful they will have something specific - a diagnosis. I'd love to see the low appetite reversed and know that she still has some sort of infection. Surprising to me, this place still thinks Hills MD dry is one of the best balanced foods you can feed (and we're not that far from where the "go wet" movement began in CA). We'll see what they have to offer re: reason for no appetite and resulting weight loss.

Re: finicky eater chooses own destiny

Well after several attempts and a glimmer following a visit to a specialist, still no good appetite and no clear cause as to why (that's the perplexing part). We've done all we can here so it's up to kitty now to choose her destiny. A great weekend to all of you!

I'll read about it this weekend - historically she has been a handful (rescue kitty so not sure what her kittenhood might have included :-)) and often refuses to eat if anyone is in the room. Thanks for the note!

Dearest KitCat,

There's an appetite enhancer, which is actually an antihystamine (sp?), and who's name escapes me at this moment. Hopefully someone will chime in with the correct name soon...

Okay, here's Gizzie's full finicky list:

Yogurt: She had a preference for peach, but occasionally liked either raspberry or blueberry...
Luncheon meat: chicken, turkey, ham, roast beef; okay, and the occasional pastrami...
Grilled: chicken breast, pork chop, and any kind of steak on sale...
Cheese: extra sharp cheddar, mozzarella, provolone, monterey jack, swiss in a pinch...
DM: canned and dry
Fish: human -- tuna (preferably white albacore packed in water) or salmon (red as opposed to the wall-eyed)...
Yung Chow or House Special Fried Shrimp Rice -- you'll need to wash the shrimp...

If you need to pack calories on quickly, I believe AD is the way to go...

I humbly suggest you try any of these possibilities, and simply leave the room, as apparently, she likes to dine alone...

Nikki's a rescue, too. She's delightfully and confoundedly quirky. I have no clue what her life was like before...

I understand... Truly...

Much love and countless encouraging and hungry hugs,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, forever whispering in my heart and who sent me Nikki!

Thanks! Another name that came up is mirtazipine so I will also check on this. If anyone knows anyone using something called Great Life Grain Free, she would eat that (but it's dry and last time I asked about this one no one had heard of it). I'm curious on the carb load but it is seriously the only thing she ate after MANY choices offered......

I can't remember if I have offered this. Have you crumbled up the dry into tiny bits and either put it on top or hidden it in the wet food?
