Late shot question

There is a chance on Monday night I will need to be at work an hour to two later than usual. What is the process for that? Do I give her more in the morning to try to carry her thru or decrease in the evening because of there being less time until the next AM shot?

Or should I just wait until Sunday, see how she's doing then and ask again?

Don't adjust the dose amount, but you can adjust the time. Usually we don't like change the shot time by more than 15 minutes per cycle. You could start to move the shot back on Sunday to get closer to when you think you will be able to shoot on Monday. Then you ned to reverse the process to get back to your normal shot time.

When will you know for sure?

Before I could take my cat to work with me on the every other Sunday that I work late,
I used to have to spend 4 days moving his shot later and then 4 days moving his shot earlier, every other week.
15 minutes each shot times 8 (4 days) equals 2 hours.

Since you won't know for sure until the last minute, I guess you'll just have to plan for it.

I think the issue will be whether you can manage to be off schedule the next several days. Will you be able to shoot later in the AM until you can transition the time back to your usual shot time. If not, you may need to skip the PM shot on Monday. The other option may be to see if there's someone who could give the shot for you at the regular time Monday night. I use a vet tech from my vet's office when I travel to care for Gabby.

here's a few more options:

not knowing if you'll have to stay late... let alone not knowing whether you'll be an hour or two late... you could let it go until that day.

if you're only an hour late, chances are you'll be able to shoot at +13 and then at +11 the next morning given ruby's food spikes. her food spikes are higher than alex's! being able to do this is probably the only advantage in having a kitty who experiences huge food spikes!

if it turns out you're 2 hours late, you could always shoot a token dose (like half the normal dose) just to get some insulin into her, but not enough to cause a problem shooting at +10 the next morning. it's not ideal, but stuff happens and we can't always stick to a 12/12 schedule. just know ahead of time the disruption will show up... maybe even a couple cycles later. however, you'll be able to get her back on track in no time. if you choose this option, i'd be sure to run home at lunch time on tuesday to get a mid-cycle spot check because of the *possibility* of the overlap giving a little extra oomph to that morning's dose. i'd also leave instructions for your dh to put some fresh food out for ruby mid-cycle to make sure she'll eat.

another option is to do an 18/18 schedule... which bring you right back on your current 12/12 schedule. again, expect the schedule change to throw her off for a few days, but it's not that big a deal. sometimes we just have to do the best we can with what we've got.

shooting an 18/18 schedule might be the way to go if ruby's range comes down lower than it's been between now and monday.

as the time gets closer, let us know what you decide so we can help.

edited to add:
for those reading...
these options are specifically for ruby. they reflect ruby's response to insulin... not that of other kitties. they may not be what's best and could cause a problem if used for YOUR cat.

Unfortunately the 18/18 won't work either. I still have to be at the office at the same time.

an example of an 18/18 schedule:

monday 6am - shoot
monday 12 midnight - shoot
tuesday 6pm - shoot

i don't know the exact times you shoot, but wouldn't that work for you?

I normally shoot at 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM. I could pull off the 6:00 and Midnight.

I would do that Monday and then just go back to normal on Tuesday?

here's the 18/18 schedule:

(+12) monday 6am - shoot
(+18) monday 12 midnight - shoot
skip tuesday's 6am shot because you shot only 6 hours ago
(+18) tuesday 6pm - shoot
(+12) wednesday 6am - shoot (right back to your normal schedule)
(+12) wednesday 6pm - shoot

on wednesday morning you'd return to your 12/12 schedule shooting at 6am and 6 pm.
make sense?
