The Lantus vial says discard 28 days after opening. The vet said the same thing and the pharmacist said it can last 2 months or more. What has been other people's experience with Lantus and the length of effectiveness after opening? Thank you!

If it's care for properly, it can last up to 6 months.

The company that makes it only submitted it to the FDA for 28 day testing, so that's all it's "officially" been tested good for, but if you keep it in the refrigerator and take good care of it, we've had it last up to 6 months

Here's some info on "Proper storage and handling of Lantus"

Thank you Chris & China. I read the same info you sent me a little earlier but just wanted some reassurance!

You will notice your BG readings gradually increasing as the insulin starts to become ineffective. One suggestion is to get prescription for the pens instead of vials. Depending on your dose, one package of pens can last 9 months or longer and you will be able to use almost every drop. When the vial becomes ineffective, you probably still will be throwing out a lot of insulin.
