Can anyone give me an answer on how long this insulin will last? It says it will expire in 28 days; I've hear so many different things 2 month, 3 months, 6 months, 28 days. I don't know what is correct!
Humans use far larger doses of insulin than we do with our kitties and humans carry their insulin pen with them at room temperature so the drug companies only test their products for a limited amount of time based on FDA requirements and normal user behaviour. If you keep the in use pen refrigerated then it can last as much as 6 months although you may find you only get 4 months before the insulin starts losing efficacy.
There is some info around that suggests not keeping the pens in the fridge as it could affect dosing however we recommend using the pen the same as a vial with syringes rather than pen needles and then refrigeration makes no difference.
If your insulin starts to show any cloudiness or particles then it is time for a new pen.
For the most people they can use almost every drop in it before it becomes ineffective. It also will depend on how long it has been since first used. The best way to tell it is still working is by home testing. That will tell you if the insulin is still controlling the glucose levels.
my insulin vial is more than 7 months old -- the insulin is still effective; I'm hearing from those using pens that they are getting full usage of the insulin in them, most of them (depending on the dose) may not even last that long before emptying out
